Here are four key takeaways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bragg_ups_the_stakes\"><\/span><strong>Bragg ups the stakes<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bragg and Jordan had previously gone back and forth by letter over a request from the House Judiciary Committee for testimony and information from Bragg and his office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The filing of a legal suit by the district\u00a0attorney\u00a0is a significant escalation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Bragg alleges that Jordan and his colleagues are engaged in a \u201cbrazen and unconstitutional attack\u2026on an ongoing New York State criminal prosecution.\u201d He further contends that they are \u201cparticipating in a campaign of intimidation, retaliation and obstruction.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bragg is seeking the invalidation of present and future subpoenas for two reasons: first, he contends Congress has no legitimate authority to make such demands regarding a criminal case at the state level; second, he contends that bowing to the House committee\u2019s demands would enable Jordan to \u201cseek\u00a0secret grand jury material.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jordan is firing back, of course.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFirst, they indict a president for no crime,\u201d he tweeted in response to Bragg\u2019s suit. \u201cThen, they sue to block congressional oversight when we ask questions about the federal funds they say they used to do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His allies have joined the fight, too. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas), who sits on the Judiciary Committee, tweeted on Tuesday, \u201cWhy does Alvin Bragg think he is above the law?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jordan_will_hit_back_on_Monday\"><\/span><strong>Jordan will hit back on Monday<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Jordan can return fire on Monday \u2014 albeit not in direct response to Bragg\u2019s suit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Judiciary Committee is holding a field hearing in New York City. The purpose is to look at crime rates \u2014 and to pin at least some of the blame on Bragg.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New York Post quoted an unnamed source as saying that the hearing would examine the city\u2019s \u201crampant crime and victims of Alvin Bragg.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Daily Mail report, retweeted by the account of the committee\u2019s Republican majority, said that the witnesses would include \u201ca bodega clerk, the mother of a homicide victim and an anti-crime activist.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s legal filing segued into a defense of his record on crime \u2014 noting, for instance, that homicides in New York City had declined 14 percent year-on-year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Jordan and his GOP colleagues clearly see a chance to hit Bragg with a combination punch \u2014 tagging the Democrat as soft-on-crime while also suggesting his pursuit of Trump is misplaced when there are more serious crimes to fight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bragg_could_win_the_battle_but_lose_the_war\"><\/span><strong>Bragg could win the battle but lose the war<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bragg plainly believes he had to defend himself against Jordan\u2019s demands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>If he were to prevail in court, that would seem likely to defang the committee \u2014 especially if it was a quick victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s far from guaranteed, however. And a long and fierce legal battle could, by its nature, deepen the perception of the investigation as deeply politicized.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That impression could endure even if Bragg wins on the legal points.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>That\u2019s a particular problem for Bragg given that even many Americans who support the indictment of Trump already see the probe as political.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an ABC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>\/Ipsos poll released earlier this month, Americans by a 45 percent to 32 percent plurality believed Trump should have been charged with a crime. But a 47 percent to 32 percent plurality also saw those charges as politically motivated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A CNN\/SSRS poll in the same period showed a similar pattern, with 62 percent <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roving of the indictment but 52 percent saying politics played a major role in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The mixed messages embedded in those results mean Bragg needs to be careful.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jordan_has_his_own_history_of_defying_subpoenas\"><\/span><strong>Jordan has his own history of defying subpoenas<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The House Judiciary Chairman has been forceful in asserting his committee\u2019s authority.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an April 6 cover letter accompanying the Pomerantz subpoena, Jordan noted that the Supreme Court had in the past recognized Congress\u2019s \u201c\u2018broad and indispensable power\u2019 to conduct oversight.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He further asserted that Pomerantz is \u201cuniquely situated to provide information that is relevant and necessary.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s one problem with such assertions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jordan was himself subpoenaed during the last Congress\u00a0by\u00a0the Jan. 6 committee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He refused to comply.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
