After a biopsy, his oncologist delivered the diagnosis: mouth cancer. Within six weeks, Michael, a financial adviser, underwent surgery to remove the tumour. To recuperate, he headed to a quiet place with his wife, Shari: their 1960s cedar log cabin\u2013style cottage on Chandos Lake, which they\u2019d purchased the year before. \u201cBeing by the water brings me a sense of peace,\u201d says Michael. During their stay, the couple\u2019s affection for the cottage grew, and they spent every summer at Chandos Lake from then on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Habitat: A B.C. construction worker sold his country house to build this eco-friendly floating home<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cottage, perched on a ledge with 100 wooden steps leading down to the lake, was in a state of disrepair when the Cherneys bought it. By 2016, mice were overrunning the property, mould bloomed in the basement and unsealed windows let in cold drafts. \u201cWe were hoping we could renovate it, but it was like putting lipstick on a pig,\u201d says Michael. \u201cIt made sense to start from scratch.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245130 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC00921.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1667\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of architect Cathy Garrido at Altius, the couple came up with a vision for a mid-century-modern sanctuary. \u201cThe words we kept using were \u2018quiet\u2019 and \u2018calm,\u2019\u201d says Shari, who works as a nursing professor. The finished product, completed in 2019, is heavily influenced by Michael\u2019s childhood home in Peterborough, designed by legendary Canadian architect Eb Zeidler, the mastermind behind Ontario Place and the Eaton Centre. The 3,200-square-foot cottage is decorated in earthy tones, with floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal the cerulean blue of the lake and a thicket of treetops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>READ:\u00a0Habitat: A former <em>New York Times<\/em> journalist built this beachside fortress in P.E.I.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245128 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_7369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1669\"\/>\u00a0<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245125 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/711-Paw-Road-Tether-076.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1669\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The interior is sparsely furnished so as to not detract from the natural beauty enveloping their property. \u201cWe don\u2019t have side tables or coffee tables yet,\u201d says Shari. The open-concept space consists of five split levels, and the ceiling, kitchen and floor are all built from Douglas fir imported from B.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245126 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/711-Paw-Road-Tether-99.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1669\"\/><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245127 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/711-Paw-Road-Tether-149.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1669\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, the best lake view is reserved for a cottage\u2019s primary bedroom, but Shari didn\u2019t want to waste it on a room where they\u2019d spend most of their time sleeping. Instead, Michael\u2019s office is there, and he works at the same mid-century-modern children\u2019s desk that used to be in his childhood bedroom. \u201cIt\u2019s a wonder he gets anything done,\u201d says Shari. The view has turned Michael into an amateur birdwatcher. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My first was a yellow-rumped warbler,\u201d he says. \u201cThen a pileated woodpecker.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1245129 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/DSC_7424.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1613\"\/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Cherneys, their cottage is much more than a summer getaway. When the pandemic struck, the couple expected to stay for 10 days and ended up living there for two and a half years. \u201cChandos is a beautiful community,\u201d says Shari, who does yoga at a studio nearby and goes on regular walks with neighbours.
