J.D. Vance (R) and Sherrod Brown (D) have been atypically united in their efforts to\u00a0pass legislation bolstering railroad safety and to\u00a0ensure residents\u00a0are not forgotten\u00a0as they gr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>le with the damage and dangers left behind by the crash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Vance told The Hill his collaboration with Brown on the rail safety bill shouldn\u2019t necessarily be taken as a signal of deeper bipartisan cooperation, either between the two men or the two parties,\u00a0but rather that it\u2019s an\u00a0issue the two of them have a particular stake in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t necessarily think it\u2019s a model for any particular issue, [but] I think that East Palestine was an issue I cared a lot about, an issue where there was some common ground with Senator Brown,\u201d Vance said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He signaled, however, that he would be open to working across the aisle on other issues in the future. \u201cI don\u2019t know that it\u2019s a model, [but] I certainly want to get more things done, so I hope so,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with The Hill, Brown noted that\u00a0this is far from the first time he\u2019s found common ground with a Republican colleague from Ohio. He said he\u2019s been doing so\u00a0since his election in 2006, first with former Sen. George Voinovich and then Vance\u2019s predecessor, Sen. Rob Portman.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Buckeye State has grown steadily redder\u00a0during Brown\u2019s time in office, voting for\u00a0former President\u00a0Trump twice even as other ancestrally Democratic states like Pennsylvania and Michigan flipped back to Biden in 2020.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The progressive senator\u00a0has handily won reelection twice,\u00a0but\u00a0his collaboration with Vance comes ahead of what promises to be a tough battle.\u00a0In 2024,\u00a0Brown\u00a0will face a contest with\u00a0a\u00a0presidential race at the top of the ballot for the first time in more than a decade. The\u00a0three-term\u00a0Democrat\u00a0is considered one of the most vulnerable senators\u00a0in\u00a0his party in the coming cycle, along with other red-state senators like Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The conservative\u00a0Vance, meanwhile,\u00a0is\u00a0more in line with the state\u2019s current voting patterns \u2014 though he recently won his seat only after a hard-fought contest of his own. He\u00a0triumphed in a bitter 2022 GOP primary after securing\u00a0an\u00a0endorsement\u00a0from\u00a0Trump, of whom Vance was once a harsh detractor\u00a0but who he embraced after entering politics.\u00a0The first-time candidate went on to defeat former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) in a similarly bruising <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio senators\u2019 political differences have not prevented them from working shoulder to shoulder following the East Palestine crash, however. Vance has even blasted\u00a0libertarian elements of his own party that oppose reforming federal oversight of rail safety, though he has seldom named names.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0senators\u2019 response has not been entirely nonpartisan \u2014 Vance has excoriated the Biden administration for its response\u00a0as well.\u00a0But\u00a0both Brown and Vance have aimed much of their fire at Norfolk Southern, the railroad that operated the derailed train and\u00a0that\u00a0the Environmental Protection Agency\u00a0(EPA)\u00a0is holding financially responsible for cleanup.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Feb. 3 East Palestine derailment spilled several cars\u2019 worth of hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride, a\u00a0cancer-causing\u00a0substance used in the production of plastics.\u00a0Norfolk Southern\u00a0conducted a controlled burn days later, citing fears of an explosion. While local and federal officials have said the town is safe for residents, testing and cleanup are ongoing and both EPA Administrator Michael Regan and Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) advised residents to use bottled water in the weeks following the derailment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The disaster has provoked widespread scrutiny of Norfolk Southern and the freight railroad industry more broadly over railroads\u2019\u00a0history of lobbying against stricter safety regulations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that Vance and I have been to the same places and spoke to the same people who expressed the same concerns: that [Norfolk Southern] is a corporation that abused the public trust,\u201d Brown told The Hill in an interview.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve spent decades and decades and decades exercising their power in Washington\u201d to avoid safety regulations,\u00a0he said,\u00a0adding that\u00a0Vance\u2019s conservatism may set them on opposite sides of other issues, but the two are united in seeking accountability from the railroad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the derailment, Brown and Vance introduced the Railway Safety Act with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Pennsylvania Sens. John Fetterman (D) and Bob Casey (D). \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bill would impose a number of safety standards that rail worker unions have repeatedly pressed for, including two-person crews on trains. It would also give the federal government, rather than private railroads, oversight over railroad-track heat sensors. The sensors on the tracks\u00a0running past East Palestine\u00a0were shown as growing steadily hotter leading up to the\u00a0February\u00a0crash, but they did not reach the\u00a0temperature\u00a0at which\u00a0trains are\u00a0required to stop until it was too late to avoid derailment. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Whether the measure will pass in the\u00a0GOP-controlled House is uncertain, but Brown expressed confidence to The Hill that\u00a0backers of the proposal\u00a0could secure a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority in the Senate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both Brown and Vance testified in March before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee,\u00a0speaking\u00a0in favor of the bill. Vance said Senate colleagues have approached the negotiations \u201cin complete good faith,\u201d but expressed frustration that people\u00a0\u2014 who he did not name \u2014\u00a0\u201cseem to think that any public safety enhancement for the rail industry is a violation of the free market.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vance has pushed for the bill to go directly to the Senate floor as part of a bipartisan deal, while his Republican colleagues have indicated they prefer it to go through the regular\u00a0order\u00a0process in the Senate Commerce Committee.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Vance was less sanguine\u00a0than Brown about the bill\u2019s chances\u00a0but still optimistic,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/03\/08\/norfolk-southern-train-derailment-ohio-senators\/\">telling\u00a0The Washington Post<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cI understand the baseline caution [among GOP senators], but I don\u2019t think that caution is going to turn into the bill dying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
