\n The Breakthrough Prize ceremony, which honors \u201cscientists changing the world\u201d with sizable cash prizes, came to Hollywood for the first time on Saturday night, having previously been held in San Francisco \u2014\u00a0and the world\u2019s top innovators were surrounded by more stars than one can see in a telescope.<\/p>\n

\n The ninth edition of the event \u2014\u00a0which was founded and is financially supported by Sergey Brin<\/strong>, Priscilla Chan<\/strong> and Mark Zuckerberg<\/strong>, Julia Milner<\/strong> and Yuri Milner<\/strong> and Anne Wojcicki<\/strong>, and has come to be known as \u201cthe Oscars of science<\/a>\u201d \u2014\u00a0took place on the open-air roof of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.<\/p>\n

\n James Corden<\/strong> hosted, as has been the case in previous years; presenters included Kristen Bell<\/strong>, Lily Collins<\/strong>, Danny DeVito<\/strong>, Robert Downey Jr.<\/strong> (alongside Zuckerberg), Gal Gadot<\/strong>, Ashton Kutcher<\/strong>, Brie Larson<\/strong>, Edward Norton<\/strong>, Leslie Odom Jr.<\/strong>, Chris Pine<\/strong> and Chloe Zhao<\/strong>; John Legend<\/strong> and will.i.am<\/strong> performed; and audience members included Christina Aguilera<\/strong>, Vin Diesel<\/strong>, Jeffrey Katzenberg<\/strong>, Mila Kunis<\/strong>, Lionel Richie<\/strong> and Maria Sharapova<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n But the real toasts of the night were the scientists, such as Drew Weissman<\/strong> and Katalin Karik\u00f3<\/strong>, whose work was fundamental in developing mRNA vaccines against COVID, and who were greeted with a lengthy standing ovation when they took the stage to collect the Breakthrough Prize in Life Science that they had been chosen for in 2022. (There was no in-person Breakthrough Prize event in 2020, 2021 or 2022 due to the pandemic.)<\/p>\n

\n At this year\u2019s ceremony, which was produced by Don Mischer<\/strong> of Don Mischer Productions with scenic design by Basil Walter<\/strong> of BW Architects, a total of $15.75 million was presented to Breakthrough Prize honorees.<\/p>\n

\n The event\u2019s highest honors are Breakthrough Prizes in three categories \u2014\u00a0fundamental physics, life sciences and mathematics \u2014 with each recipient receiving a $3 million cash prize for their contributions.<\/p>\n
