In this country, justice is supposed to be blind, regardless of race, religion or creed,\u201d he added. \u201cHowever, here in Manhattan, the scales of justice are weighed down by politics. For the district attorney, justice isn\u2019t blind \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s about looking for opportunities to advance a political agenda, a radical political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lawmakers_trade_barbs_crime_stats\"><\/span><strong>Lawmakers trade barbs, crime stats<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lawmakers spent much of the hearing trading barbs over its motive and sw<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing statistics about crime rates \u2013 with Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) at one point moving to hold the hearing near Jordan\u2019s district instead, pointing to higher rates of some crimes in Columbus, Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Seated at the witness table were eight witnesses, a mix of family members of victims or crime as well as advocates for both addressing crime and gun violence, and even a Democratic member of the New York City Council alarmed by crime rates in the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo our witnesses here today who shared their pain and trauma in being victims of crime and violence: I am so sorry for the impact that has had on you and your families,\u201d Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Penn.).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI applaud your courage in trying to take that pain and move to change things going forward. But I fear that you have been revictimized by this hearing because this hearing is not going to provide that change. It\u2019s not a serious effort to make our communities safer. Our Republican colleagues aren\u2019t in New York City to prevent crime. They\u2019re here to protect someone who\u2019s been charged with committing crimes,\u201d she said, referring to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Bragg\u2019s office has pushed back on GOP claims that the city is overwhelmed by crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cD.A. Bragg is reducing crime in Manhattan, reversing a tough spike that began before he even took office. Virtually, every major crime category is lower in Manhattan now than it was last year,\u201d a spokesperson for the office wrote in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ManhattanDA\/status\/1648027014312390668?s=20\">statement<\/a>\u00a0following the hearing. \u201cDuring the first quarter of 2023 the NYPD reported steep declines in most major crime categories, including murder, rape, robbery, and burglary.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cFor outside politicians to now appear in New York City on the taxpayer dime for a political stunt is a slap in the face to the dedicated NYPD officers, prosecutors and other public servants who work tirelessly every day with facts and data to keep our home safe,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the hearing, the office\u2019s official <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> account\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ManhattanDA\/status\/1647984952942764032?s=20\">posted<\/a>\u00a0statistics on enforcement action under Bragg.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the committee, sought to take that comparison further, drawing in a witness to rattle off a string of statistics about crime in red-leaning states.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>And Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) accused Republicans of hosting the hearing in New York to embarrass or intimidate Bragg because of the Trump indictment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe majority denies that this is the purpose of today\u2019s hearing,\u201d Schiff said. \u201cThey would have you believe it is a mere coincidence that all of a sudden and out of the blue the chairman decided that the state of New York is a wonderful place to do a hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the chairman\u2019s home of Ohio with its high rates of murder, but New York state. And of all the cities in New York, they would pick New York City. And of all the boroughs of New York in New York they pick Manhattan. Apparently Manhattan is just lovely this time of year,\u201d he continued. \u201cWhat a remarkable coincidence we are meant to believe. Of all the gin joints and all the towns in all the world, we just happen to walk into this one. How absurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Republicans_highlight_Braggs_policies\"><\/span><strong>Republicans highlight Bragg\u2019s policies<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Republican lawmakers and witnesses repeatedly brought up a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Day-One-Letter-Policies-1.03.2022.pdf\">\u201cDay One\u201d memo<\/a>\u00a0Bragg issued at the beginning of his term that instructed his office to use pretrial detention only for those charged with the most serious crimes. It also called for not prosecuting certain low-level offenses.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Police Department commissioner and Republicans criticized the memo, and the district attorney <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manhattanda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2022.02.04.Letter.pdf\">revised his policies<\/a> the next month. That did not deter GOP lawmakers from using the memo as fodder for attacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s taken his soft-on-crime approach to real criminals,\u201d Jordan said of Bragg, outlining parts of the memo. He then quoted Paul DiGiacomo, the president of the New York City\u2019s Detectives\u2019 Endowment Association who testified at Monday\u2019s hearing.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Bragg gives criminals the roadmap to freedom from prosecution and control of our streets. In Bragg\u2019s Manhattan you can resist arrest, deal drugs, obstruct arrest and even carry a gun to get away with it.\u2019 And guess what happened under this new policy? More crime,\u201d Jordan said, listing off statistics of felony assaults, robberies, burglaries and grand larcenies and more in the city.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fiery_hearing_leaves_witnesses_frustrated\"><\/span><strong>Fiery hearing leaves witnesses frustrated<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>But witnesses during the hearing expressed frustration at not getting more time to respond to Democrats\u2019 talking points and at Jordan\u2019s management of chatter and disruption to the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t talk down to the witnesses,\u201d one said as Jordan asked for quiet in the hearing room.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThey keep addressing us, the victims who are here to testify and make change. We\u2019re here to effectuate change and they\u2019re not allowing us to comment at all,\u201d Jennifer Harrison, founder of Victims Rights NY.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison\u2019s group describes itself as being \u201cliterally on the battleground of good vs evil fighting against George Soros and his puppet candidates who want a complete breakdown of society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In one testy exchange toward the end of the hearing, Madeleine Brame\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the chairwoman of the Victims Rights Reform Council and the mother of homicide victim \u2014\u00a0shot back at Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) when the New York Democrat explained why he believes Republicans refrained from frequently mentioning Trump during Monday\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t insult my intelligence,\u201d Brame yelled out, which Goldman rejected. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to insult me like I\u2019m not aware of what\u2019s going on here, okay. I\u2019m fully aware of what\u2019s going on here, okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I walked away from the plantation of the Democratic Party,\u201d she added, leading Jordan to request that the committee be in order.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing \u2014 which was preceded by a press conference held by Nadler, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D), other Democratic lawmakers and gun prevention advocates \u2014 marked a shift in how Democrats have handled the off-sight hearings.<\/p>\n<p>Other earlier hearings held beyond the halls of Congress were boycotted by Democrats, allowing the GOP to interview witnesses and air talking points with little challenge.<\/p>\n<p>But Democrats sprung into action for the New York hearing, including roping in lawmakers otherwise not serving on the Judiciary Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Goldman does not sit on the panel but he received a waiver to participate in Monday\u2019s hearing, which took place in his district. House GOP Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) and Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) also received waivers to attend the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a few minutes the House Judiciary Committee will convene what the chairman calls a field hearing. It may have some of the trappings of a hearing \u2014\u00a0we will have opening statements and witnesses and the members who will ask questions. But don\u2019t be fooled, this is not a serious exercise.
