It follows on from a successful <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eismea.ec.europa.eu\/news\/eu-launches-women-techeu-pilot-put-women-forefront-deep-tech-2021-07-13_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pilot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021 which featured 50 startups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The startups selected for the second round will now each receive an individual grant of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20ac<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75,000. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he female founders will also be offered mentoring and coaching under the European Innovation Council (EIC) <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eic.ec.europa.eu\/eic-funding-opportunities\/business-acceleration-services\/eic-women-leadership-programme_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women Leadership Programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and be afforded access to EU networking opportunities.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The startups operate in 16 different deep tech sectors, and have <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eismea.ec.europa.eu\/system\/files\/2023-03\/Women%20TechEU%202022%20companies_updated.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> solutions ranging from new medical drugs and carbon capture technologies, to digital learning and autonomous robotics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the participants is Sweden-based <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/norbite.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norbite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which uses insects to recycle plastic waste, Netherlands-based <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.agurotech.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agurotech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which digitises farming using AI, and Lithuania-based <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inobiostar.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inobiostar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has developed a waste paper-based material for removing oil spills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"inarticle-wrapper latest channel-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div id=\"hs-embed-tnw\" class=\"channel-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"channel-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"js-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/visuals\/tnw-newsletter.png\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"channel-cta-input\">\n<h2 class=\"channel-cta-title\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The\"><\/span>The &lt;3 of EU tech<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"channel-cta-tagline\">The latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol&#8217; founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy combining innovative ideas, female entrepreneurship, and excellent research and development, this year\u2019s companies selected for WomenTechEU will contribute to enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of the EU and beyond,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eismea.ec.europa.eu\/news\/second-edition-womentecheu-supports-134-female-led-deep-tech-companies-increased-budget-10-million-2023-04-14_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the European Innovation Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eep tech makes up over a quarter of Europe\u2019s startup ecosystem, with European deep tech companies <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/europeanstartups.co\/reports\/2021-the-year-of-deep-tech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">valued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a combined \u20ac700bn in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet women remain chronically <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underrepresented<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: last year <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 3% of VC funding in European deep tech went to women-founded startups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These inequities are prevalent across the industry, but magnified in the deep tech sector. Deep tech startups tend to have longer R&amp;D cycles, and require higher capital outlay than traditional startups, which makes it even <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dealroom.co\/uploaded\/2023\/01\/Dealroom-deep-tech-report-2023-europe.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for women-led and women-founded teams to scale up.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not just bad practice, it\u2019s also bad for business. According to consulting firm <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/mckinsey-digital\/our-insights\/women-in-tech-the-best-bet-to-solve-europes-talent-shortage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the European tech ecosystem will only be able to remain competitive if it manages to attract and retain more female talent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And investors seem to agree: \u201cDiversity of thought, opinion and creativity is essential for our deep tech ecosystem to thrive,\u201d said Christina Franzeskides, deep tech investor at Lakestar, in the 2023 <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dealroom.co\/uploaded\/2023\/01\/Dealroom-deep-tech-report-2023-europe.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Deep Tech Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo that end, we must strive towards inclusivity, across all backgrounds and genders, for the space to reach its full potential,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Commission <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/eismea.ec.europa.eu\/news\/eu-launches-second-edition-women-techeu-2022-06-21_en#:~:text=Today%2C%20women%20obtain%20only%2010,companies%2C%20creating%20a%20vicious%20circle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that giving women-founded startups the right support and investment early on can help bridge deep tech\u2019s gender gap, and strengthen the ecosystem as a whole.\u00a0<\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
