Ron DeSantis (R) is facing pressure to rehab his political standing amid new concerns about his strength in a 2024 presidential race.<\/p>\n<p>The governor has taken repeated hits from former President Trump over the past several weeks and has already lost out on several high-profile endorsements, including a handful from GOP lawmakers in his state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Meanwhile, Republican donors are expressing concern publicly and privately about DeSantis\u2019s electoral viability and are choosing to remain on the sidelines of the nascent 2024 primary for the time being, according to two sources familiar with recent donor discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the people that disdain Trump and want the party to move on are keeping their powder dry,\u201d said one Republican strategist who\u2019s spoken to party donors in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>One top Republican donor, billionaire businessman Thomas Peterffy, expressed those concerns publicly,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9fa26170-5533-4e0b-a852-238b0ef15118\">telling the Financial Times<\/a>\u00a0in a story published over the weekend he put plans to back a likely DeSantis presidential bid \u201con hold\u201d amid worries about the governor\u2019s stance on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of his stance on abortion and book banning \u2026 myself, and a bunch of friends, are holding our powder dry,\u201d Peterffy told the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper. His remarks were published just two days after DeSantis signed legislation banning abortions in Florida after six weeks of pregnancy, tying himself to an issue that has proved difficult for Republicans to navigate.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis hasn\u2019t formally launched a presidential campaign yet, and an announcement isn\u2019t expected until May or June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DeSantis_is_%E2%80%98being_outflanked_for_now\"><\/span>DeSantis is \u2018being outflanked for now\u2019 <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Recent setbacks and challenges, ranging from a poorly received comment about Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine to a slew of attacks from Trump and his team, have forced the governor and his allies to reckon with the often-precious realities of national political stardom.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s having the growing pains of that jump from running a state-level campaign to a national campaign,\u201d said Ford O\u2019Connell, a Republican strategist. \u201cIt\u2019s like running several races at once. He\u2019s being outflanked right now, and if you don\u2019t find a way to punch back and also sell your record, you\u2019re going to have some trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After sidestepping Trump\u2019s attacks for weeks, a super PAC backing a 2024 presidential run by DeSantis went up on the air on Sunday with a TV ad hitting Trump for \u201cspending millions attacking the Republican governor of Florida,\u201d while facing legal trouble in New York.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-second spot from the group Never Back Down also accuses the former president of lying about DeSantis wanting to cut funding for Social Security and Medicare \u2014 a talking point used aggressively by Trump\u2019s allies in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cTrump should fight Democrats \u2014 not lie about Gov. Recent polling has shown\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/trump-desantis-national-polls\/\">Trump widening his lead over DeSantis<\/a>, while the Florida governor has also suffered a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of defections from members of his state\u2019s congressional delegation, who have endorsed Trump in the nascent 2024 Republican primary.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>While some of those members, like Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.), were seen as likely to get behind Trump\u2019s 2024 campaign, Rep. Byron Donalds\u2019s (R-Fla.) decision this month to endorse the former president was a tough blow for DeSantis, who has counted Donalds among his allies.<\/p>\n<p>In a sign of growing concern about DeSantis\u2019s political backers, the Florida governor\u2019s supporters have started reaching out to members of the state\u2019s congressional delegation to press them to hold off on endorsing in the presidential primary for now. Those conversations were\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/ron-desantis-team-tries-stop-florida-gop-endorsing-trump-rcna79379\">first reported last week by NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis is also set to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday to meet with congressional Republicans, including Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas), and Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), according to a copy of the invite obtained by The Hill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>So far, Massie and Roy are the only congressional Republicans to have endorsed DeSantis\u2019s expected presidential bid.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is expected to roll out more congressional endorsements in the coming weeks, according to two people familiar with the efforts. On Monday, Trump picked up the support of four Tennessee Republican lawmakers: Sens. Bill Hagerty and Marsha Blackburn, as well as Reps. Diana Harshbarger and John Rose.<\/p>\n<p>In another blow to DeSantis, another Florida Republican, Rep. Greg Steube, threw his support behind Trump on Monday night, telling conservative network Newsmax the former president is \u201cthe only person that can reverse on Day 1 all these disastrous policies of the Biden administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cause_for_concern_Maybe_not\"><\/span>Cause for concern? Maybe not<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Still, some Republicans said there\u2019s little for DeSantis to worry about right now, noting the Iowa caucuses \u2014 the first nominating contest for the GOP in 2024 \u2014 are still more than nine months away and that DeSantis hasn\u2019t even announced a presidential bid yet.<\/p>\n<p>Saul Anuzis, a Republican strategist and former Michigan GOP chair, praised DeSantis and his team for sticking \u201cto their own timetable\u201d rather than allowing themselves to be dragged into day-to-day political fights, adding that the Florida governor \u201cis doing everything that he should be doing to prepare for a campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s done extremely well in meeting with the donor community, which is kind of the critical thing at this stage in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>,\u201d Anuzis said. \u201cHe\u2019s been doing a lot of trips around the country. It\u2019s very obvious that he\u2019s serious about all this.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think Donald Trump has landed any blows on him yet that are really detrimental,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s Donald Trump being Donald Trump, and it makes Ron DeSantis look like he\u2019s above that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
