{"id":570925,"date":"2023-04-19T22:16:52","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T19:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/supreme-court-extends-brief-pause-on-abortion-pill-ruling\/"},"modified":"2023-04-19T22:16:52","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T19:16:52","slug":"supreme-court-extends-brief-pause-on-abortion-pill-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/supreme-court-extends-brief-pause-on-abortion-pill-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"#Supreme Court extends brief pause on abortion pill ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/SCOTUS-06302020.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Access to a common abortion pill mifepristone will remain unchanged through at least Friday after the Supreme Court extended its brief pause until the end of the workweek.<\/p>\n<p>Justice\u00a0Samuel Alito,\u00a0who handles emergency requests from the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>eals, announced the move in a brief order, extending the administrative pause until Friday at 11:59 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The order doesn\u2019t give any indication for how the high court will proceed; it effectively gives the justices a few more days to decide whether they will pause a ruling that would roll back access to the drug.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration and the company that manufactures a brand name version of mifepristone have asked the high court to intervene and pause a ruling from U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Kacsmaryk\u2019s decision suspended the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s 23-year-old approval of mifepristone, ruling that the agency\u2019s approval process was improperly rushed and resulted in an unsafe drug regimen getting on the market.<\/p>\n<p>The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last week preserved the FDA\u2019s original approval of mifepristone as the Biden administration appeals, but the 5th Circuit allowed other portions of Kacsmaryk\u2019s decision to go into effect, which blocked steps the FDA has taken since 2015 to ease access to mifepristone.<\/p>\n<p>Those preserved changes include allowing mifepristone to be sent through the mail, lifting a requirement for three in-person visits, approving a generic and approving the drug\u2019s use up to 10 weeks into a pregnancy, rather than seven weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Alito\u2019s order is procedural and briefly keeps the status quo until the high court can decide whether to pause the remaining portions of Kacsmaryk\u2019s decision from going into effect, until the 5th Circuit issues its ruling on the administration\u2019s appeal.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Alito can technically act on the administration\u2019s emergency request alone, although major applications like this one are typically referred to the full court.<\/p>\n<p>If the Supreme Court declines to extend the pause after Friday, the Justice Department has warned of \u201cchaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brand-name version of mifepristone would have to apply for a new label and packaging, which could take months.
