Could be. All U.S. embassy personnel and dependents under American security were evacuated from Khartoum over the weekend, the State Department and Biden administration announced (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/us-personnel-dependents-evacuated-embassy-sudan-rcna81015\">NBC News<\/a>). The U.S. embassy was <em>\u201ctemporarily suspending operations,\u201d<\/em> the president said late Saturday, adding, \u201c<em>our commitment to the Sudanese people and the future they want for themselves is unending.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the U.S. government has said it is trying to help the estimated 16,000 Americans living in Sudan, most of whom are dual citizens, although only an estimated 60 have left the country (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2023\/04\/23\/world\/sudan-khartoum-fighting-news\/c49b1842-27eb-5b2e-9cd1-eceeec3b4911?smid=url-share\">The New York Times<\/a>). Other countries, including <strong>Saudi Arabia<\/strong>, <strong>the Netherlands<\/strong>, <strong>Greece<\/strong>, <strong>Ireland<\/strong> and <strong>Jordan<\/strong>, have organized rescue efforts, while <strong>Ghana<\/strong> said it\u2019s working to evacuate its citizens through <strong>Ethiopia<\/strong> (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-24\/thousands-flee-sudan-fighting-as-countries-pull-out-diplomats#xj4y7vzkg?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg News<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The evacuations come after more than a week of clashes, concentrated in Khartoum, are unfolding as two rival <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>s \u2014 Gen. <strong>Abdul Fattah al-Burhan<\/strong>, leading the Sudanese Army, and Lt. Gen. <strong>Mohamed Hamdan,<\/strong> commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), respectively\u00a0 \u2014 turn the capital into their own personal battlefield. According to the United Nations, at least 420 people have been killed in the clashes and 3,700 injured; two-thirds of the country\u2019s hospitals have closed. Food is becoming scarce as prices soar, and the situation is likely to worsen as the country\u2019s largest flour mill was destroyed in fighting this weekend. Even supplies of cash are running low.<\/p>\n<p>Locals and foreigners alike are fleeing the battle zones if they can; evacuations of diplomatic staff and the United Nations have been stepped up over the weekend. His <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> will mark the first state visit to the United States by a South Korean leader since 2011 and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the countries\u2019 alliance. But one progressive \u2014 a suited up, camera-ready congressman from California \u2014 is determined to try something new across the country. The Hill\u2019s Hanna Trudo spoke with Rep. <strong>Ro Khanna<\/strong> (D-Calif.) about his hopes to connect with communities daring to ask for something they say the party\u2019s not delivering.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOne of the things that is a stereotype in my view against rural Americans is this view somehow that they don\u2019t understand what\u2019s happening in the world,\u201d<\/em> Khanna told The Hill. <em>\u201cThey get it. A letter sent to Biden by 19 GOP lawmakers criticized <em>\u201cunlimited arms supplies in support of an endless war\u201d <\/em>in Ukraine and urged the Biden administration to <em>\u201cadvocate for a negotiated peace between the two sides.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It echoed an ask made back in October by 30 progressive lawmakers, who sent a similar letter to Biden expressing a desire to <em>\u201cavoid a prolonged conflict\u201d<\/em> and to <em>\u201cpair the military and economic support\u201d<\/em> for Ukraine with a <em>\u201cproactive diplomatic push.\u201d<\/em> That letter, however, was quickly retracted amid backlash \u2014 including from fellow Democrats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The common ground between the two opposing ends of both parties illustrates that the political spectrum is a \u201ccircle,\u201d particularly when it comes to foreign policy, <strong>Danielle Pletka<\/strong>, a senior fellow in foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, told The Hill. <em>\u201cThe far left and the far right are far more similar to each other than the people in the center on the left and right,\u201d<\/em> she said, noting they share skepticism over U.S.-Israel relations and foreign conflicts.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2023\/04\/21\/georgia-us-release-political-prisoners-russia-nato-eu\/\">Foreign Policy<\/a>: Congress calls on the pro-Russian government in the country of Georgia to release political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Democrats finally broke the logjam in the Senate Judiciary Committee last week by advancing seven judicial nominees for confirmation votes \u2014 the first time since mid-February that nominees were advanced to the full Senate. As The Hill\u2019s Al Weaver reports, it only happened with GOP help, giving Democrats some hope the panel can operate effectively in the absence of Sen. <strong>Dianne Feinstein<\/strong> (D-Calif.). But how long that goodwill can last remains an open question, as there is no sign that four partisan nominees will be going anywhere without movement on Feinstein\u2019s part in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe still have a measure of bipartisanship,\u201d<\/em> said Sen. <strong>Richard Blumenthal<\/strong> (D-Conn.). <em>\u201cThere\u2019s a common interest in having judges on the bench in both red and blue states, and I think it bodes somewhat well, but still, we need to do a lot more.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2023\/04\/23\/fetterman-returns-to-senate\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>: A look under the hoodie: Inside Sen. <strong>John Fetterman\u2019s<\/strong> (D-Pa.) first week back.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"><strong><u>IN FOCUS\/SHARP TAKES<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u27a4<\/strong><strong> POLITICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent polls hint that the 2024 election cycle could throw doors open to the unexpected. The cycle will stretch an exhausting two years. It\u2019s projected to be the most expensive presidential race in history. And it could feature familiar, aging contenders most Americans say they\u2019re not thrilled to see on the ballot again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What seems the same could change the picture.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe president needs to reflect the age group in the country. They should both retire,\u201d<\/em> one Democratic poll respondent from Washington State<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/nbc-news-poll-nearly-70-gop-voters-stand-trump-indictment-investigatio-rcna80917\"> told NBC News<\/a>, referring to Trump. <em>\u201cIt is someone else\u2019s turn.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPresident Biden\u2019s numbers are not where they need to be at this stage,<\/em>\u201d said Democratic pollster <strong>Jeff Horwitt<\/strong> of Hart Research, who conducted NBC\u2019s survey with Republican pollster <strong>Bill McInturff<\/strong> and his team at Public Opinion Strategies. Horwitt pointed to the president\u2019s struggles with independents, adding, <em>\u201cYes, Joe Biden has work to do, but he still is viewed less negatively than Donald Trump.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Hill: Majorities in an NBC News survey said they do not want a Biden-Trump rematch in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>What are some known unknowns? The possible entry of an independent presidential candidate who theoretically could tip the balance in narrowly divided battleground states; candidates so intent on base politics, they change the terrain of the general election; reactions to potential recession, misinformation and conspiracy theories, rising mistrust in government and the impact of a national security threat to the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and health: Biden is 80; Trump is 76.<\/p>\n<p>Biden is (tentatively, per sources) poised on Tuesday to launch his reelection bid with a video and fundraising appeals. He spent the weekend at Camp David sorting out some of the details. The electricity sector generates a quarter of all planet-warming pollution in the U.S., according to the EPA, and slashing that pollution quickly is key for the country to achieve net-zero climate emissions by 2050, as Biden has pledged to do. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the United States. It starts as a polyp, or an abnormal growth, in the large intestine, which over time may become cancerous and potentially spread to other parts of the body. <em>\u201cI don\u2019t want people to panic,<\/em>\u201d said <strong>Nancy Baxter<\/strong>, a colorectal surgeon and head of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne. The lawsuit from voting systems company Smartmatic similarly accuses Fox of maliciously giving Trump lawyers <strong>Sidney Powell<\/strong> and <strong>Rudy Giuliani<\/strong> a platform to air false claims about the election. But unlike Dominion, Smartmatic is also suing multiple hosts and Giuliani as individuals in addition to the network.
