The United States has already bumped up against its $31.4 trillion debt limit and \u2014 if Congress fails to act \u2014 could default on its debt as early as June, economists estimate (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/when-will-us-hit-the-debt-ceiling-limit-economists-move-up-x-date-estimates\/\">CBS News<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\u200b\u200b<strong><em>\u201cYou guys have been wrong,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> McCarthy told reporters after the bill passed Wednesday. <strong><em>\u201cYou\u2019ve underestimated us.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">House Majority Leader <strong>Steve Scalise<\/strong> (R-La.) said House Republicans <em>\u201cshocked the rest of Washington, D.C. \u2014 including the White House \u2014 because I think they were all betting and rooting against us passing a bill.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell, now we\u2019ve done it,\u201d<\/em> Scalise said of the debt limit bill.<\/p>\n<p>While McCarthy succeeded in pulling his often-fractious conference together to get the measure across the finish line, now comes the tricky dance of negotiating with <strong>President Biden<\/strong> and Senate Democrats on spending and debt limit measures without alienating the rightmost wing of his conference. As The Hill\u2019s Emily Brooks reports, some conservatives have signaled they will not accept any deal that s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s away the bulk of their package. But business groups, fiscal hawks and some congressional Democrats are calling on the president to begin talks in earnest toward a deal that would avoid a default on the debt (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/27\/us\/politics\/biden-debt-ceiling.html\">The New York Times<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019ve encouraged the President to meet. I told him I\u2019d get soft food, whatever it takes, we could sit down, we can meet together. He refuses.<\/em>\u201d McCarthy said during <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsnationnow.com\/politics\/mccarthy-defends-work-requirements\/\">a Thursday NewsNation interview<\/a>, repeating a prior jibe about Biden\u2019s age. <em>\u201cSo he\u2019s putting our economy in jeopardy and I\u2019m fearful that the American public will be very upset with him if he does it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>With the X date looming, Congress and the White House must act fast to get negotiations rolling. One Republican, Sen. <strong>Lisa Murkowski <\/strong>(Alaska), this week joined Democrats\u2019 years-long call for legislation that would create a binding code of ethics for the justices such as the one in place for federal judges. Back in 2011, Chief Justice <strong>John Roberts <\/strong>questioned whether Congress had authority to step in, and this week, he declined an invitation from the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify before lawmakers, attaching to his letter a \u201cStatement on Ethics and Principles\u201d signed by all nine justices, which notes they consult the code for lower courts as one of multiple non-binding authorities in handling dilemmas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt meant absolutely nothing,\u201d<\/em> <strong>Gabe Roth<\/strong>, executive director of Fix the Court, told The Hill. <em>\u201cIt was worse than nothing, because at least with nothing, you could potentially convince yourself that maybe the justices would do something. Thousands of Ukrainian troops have been training in the West to use different military assets on the battlefield in a combined way ahead of a counteroffensive, but military experts said Moscow\u2019s defenses, mostly built in the wake of Ukraine\u2019s rapid autumn advances, could make it harder for Kyiv to attack (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russia-digs-ukraine-prepares-attack-2023-04-27\/\">Reuters<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s not the numbers for the Ukrainians. The students on foot contemplate their choices: Walk around the trains, perhaps a mile or more, or risk their lives or limbs to climb under and through spaces between train cars to clear the tracks. The stopped trains, sometimes blocking pass-throughs for days and weeks, also interfere with emergency and fire vehicles.
