Laura Kelly\u2019s veto of the measure.<\/p>\n<p>The Kansas House voted 84-40 Thursday to override Kelly\u2019s veto of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/measures\/documents\/sb180_enrolled.pdf\">Senate Bill 180<\/a>, which defines sex in state law to mean an \u201cindividual\u2019s biological sex, either male or female, at birth.\u201d The Senate voted 28-12 on Wednesday to do the same.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The measure, which will take effect July 1, also legally defines women as individuals \u201cwhose biological reproductive system is developed to produce ova\u201d and men as individuals \u201cwhose biological reproductive system is developed to fertilize the ova of a female.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It declares that \u201cdistinctions between the sexes\u201d in certain spaces \u201care substantially related to the important governmental objectives of protecting the health, safety and privacy of individuals in such circumstances.\u201d The new law <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lies to school restrooms, locker rooms, prisons, domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers.<\/p>\n<p>While supporters of the measure have argued that such legislation is needed to prevent transgender women from sharing bathrooms, changing rooms and other facilities with cisgender women and girls, opponents have criticized the law for being too broad and difficult to enforce.<\/p>\n<p>The measure could also legally write transgender people out of state law,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlliRaine22\/status\/1650504703237603330\">some LGBTQ activists have argued<\/a>. A bill that seeks to adopt a similarly narrow definition of sex in state law was passed by legislators in Montana this week. Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) is expected to sign the measure.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly this month vetoed Senate Bill 180, along with three other bills targeting the rights of transgender young people. In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/kslegislature.org\/li\/b2023_24\/measures\/documents\/sb26_enrolled.pdf\">a veto message<\/a>, she wrote that legislation barring transgender people from public accommodations would draw businesses out of Kansas and make the state vulnerable to legal challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies have made it clear that they are not interested in doing business with states that discriminate against workers and their families,\u201d Kelly wrote. \u201cBy s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ping away rights from Kansans and opening the state up to expensive and unnecessary lawsuits, these bills would hurt our ability to continue breaking economic records and landing new business deals.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovLauraKelly\/status\/1651696045871562752\">a Twitter post<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday, Kelly said the bills passed by the legislature \u201cwill reverse much of the progress we\u2019ve made in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised Kansans I\u2019d govern from the middle of the road and that I\u2019d serve as a check on legislation that is too extreme one way or the other,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed some legislators are eager to force through extremist legislation that will hurt our economy and tarnish our reputation as the Free State.
