{"id":572296,"date":"2023-04-29T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-29T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/vulnerable-house-republicans-prepare-to-fend-off-attacks-over-debt-ceiling-vote\/"},"modified":"2023-04-29T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-29T10:00:00","slug":"vulnerable-house-republicans-prepare-to-fend-off-attacks-over-debt-ceiling-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/vulnerable-house-republicans-prepare-to-fend-off-attacks-over-debt-ceiling-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"#Vulnerable House Republicans prepare to fend off attacks over debt ceiling vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/illo-capitol-VM-GN_GOP-districts.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House Republicans left Washington this week feeling triumphant about passing a bill that pairs a debt limit increase with steep spending cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But vulnerable Republicans in battleground districts must now contend with Democrats aiming to weaponize their votes for a sweeping bill that none of them intended to be the final package.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe are not surprised that so-called Republican moderates, who talk a good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>, but at the end of the day always, always, always vote with the extremists,\u201d House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a press conference on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are going to have to answer for their hypocrisy,\u201d Jeffries said.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have argued that the bill\u2019s proposal to revert discretionary spending to fiscal 2022 levels would threaten programs for veterans and education; that increased work requirements for public assistance programs would hurt families; and that Republicans\u2019 attempt to repeal green energy tax credits would threaten jobs and local economies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy siding with extreme MAGA Republicans and embracing a plan that would cause a catastrophic default in order to force an extreme, out-of-touch agenda, vulnerable Republicans are helping build the case against themselves for 2024,\u201d\u00a0Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spokesperson Tommy Garcia said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>House Majority Forward, a nonprofit affiliated with the Democratic leadership-aligned House Majority PAC, came out with a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/minutes\/congress\/04-24-2023\/hmp-ad-buy-in-ny\/\">television ad campaign<\/a>\u00a0this week accusing Republicans of threatening to default on the national debt or \u201cwildly slash things America cares about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But vulnerable Republicans are projecting confidence that the attacks won\u2019t land.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe have a secret strategy: We\u2019re going to tell the truth,\u201d National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers can go back to districts and communicate. But what we passed is responsible. And by the way, it\u2019s the only plan out there. Folks don\u2019t like it, they can offer an alternative and we can negotiate,\u201d Hudson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDemocrats are gonna attack me no matter what I do. They attack me for voting with them,\u201d said Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.), adding he is not \u201cwasting time worrying about what they\u2019re gonna say.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Republicans have dismissed Democrats saying the bill will hurt veterans. And they note the country was operating at fiscal 2022 levels until December of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) called Democratic attacks \u201caudacious\u201d and \u201ccrazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll we\u2019re saying is we should spend exactly what we spent four months ago,\u201d McCarthy said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.) said that in an anonymous survey at one of his recent tele-town halls, listeners agreed 3 to 1 with limiting spending concurrently with raising the debt limit.<\/p>\n<p>And Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) similarly said polling in his district \u2014 which has a high number of upper-income, college-educated voters \u2014 has found that \u201ceven my Democrats are almost becoming debt-phobic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think they\u2019re pushing us off a plank, [but] they may be the ones about to fall into the ocean,\u201d Schweikert said, referring to Democrats. \u201cThey may be behind the electoral curve.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/americanactionnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/AAN-Debt-Ceiling-Survey-Memo-.pdf\">An April poll<\/a>\u00a0commissioned by the American Action Network, a nonprofit issue advocacy group aligned with House leadership, found that 50 percent of voters in 87 battleground House districts opposed raising the debt limit without cutting government spending \u2014 President Biden\u2019s position on the matter \u2014 while 37 percent supported it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Battleground seat Republicans acknowledge there are some provisions in the bill that could concern their constituents.<\/p>\n<p>Midwestern Republicans\u2019 resistance to provisions that would have eliminated tax credits for ethanol biofuels led GOP leadership to cave and remove that provision in the bill in the wee hours of the morning before the vote \u2014 demonstrating the serious implications of some of the provisions for members in tough districts.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But a key reason vulnerable Republicans are confident they can rationalize their votes to constituents is because the debt limit bill \u2014 which pairs a $1.5 trillion debt ceiling increase with around $4.8 trillion in deficit reductions over a decade \u2014 is because they see it as a way to bring Biden to the negotiating table rather than as a final package.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-Va.) in a speech on the House floor expressed her concerns about the legislation repealing tax credits for green energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese credits have been very beneficial for my constituents, attracting significant investment in new manufacturing jobs for businesses in southeast Virginia,\u201d Kiggans said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI recognize that this bill is not the final product. But I also understand that it gets us to the negotiating table,\u201d Kiggans said, ultimately voting in favor of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Kiggans asked on the House floor that she have the opportunity to address those concerns as negotiations move forward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the starting point for a negotiation,\u201d LaLota said.<\/p>\n<p>New York Republicans, furthermore, have also hoped to use the negotiations to restore the state and local tax (SALT) deduction \u2014 a provision that did not make it into the House GOP\u2019s bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll be candid,\u201d LaLota added. \u201cThere\u2019s not the support that we need for it today.
