\n From the left: Progressives Politicize COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nationwide protests, Thomas Chatterton Williams frets at The Guardian, are \u201cinevitably increasing the chances\u201d of further coronavirus contagion. Yet journalists and experts who two weeks ago \u201cshamed people\u201d for \u201cinsufficient social<\/a> distancing\u201d now shame people for not gathering in protest. That \u201cwhiplash-inducing messaging\u201d mocks the \u201cmany millions\u201d who \u201cput their lives on hold\u201d during the pandemic \u2014 and proves elites have \u201chemorrhaged credibility and authority\u201d by \u201cpoliticizing science<\/a>.\u201d When they urge \u201cskeptical masses to submit to an unproven vaccine\u201d or more \u201ccrushing stay-at-home orders,\u201d Williams wonders, \u201cwill anyone still listen?\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: Blinding by \u2018Science\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Throughout the pandemic, political leaders insisted on following \u201cthe science\u201d \u2014 yet, sighs City Journal\u2019s John Tierney, it\u2019s \u201cnever been obvious just what \u2018the science\u2019 is\u201d besides \u201cthe modern equivalent of the Oracle of Delphi.\u201d It \u201cgives leaders an excuse to duck responsibility for decisions \u2014 and their consequences.\u201d Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared \u201cthe experts\u201d would \u00addecide when upstate counties with few cases could reopen, letting him blame the resulting \u201ceconomic destruction on someone else.\u201d But scientists don\u2019t \u201cknow what effect the various lockdown measures have on \u00adviral spread, let alone people\u2019s lives and livelihoods,\u201d and the governor\u2019s consultants have made serious mistakes. His \u201cfaith in the experts\u201d \u00adremains \u201cunshaken\u201d \u2014 largely because it means \u201cpassing the buck.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Explaining Away \u2018Defund\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

When protesters \u201cchant \u2018defund the police\u2019\u200a\u201d and \u201ccarry \u2018defund-the-police\u2019 signs,\u201d most people assume they want to defund the police, quips \u00adNational Review\u2019s Dan McLaughlin. \u201cBut not our media!\u201d The press have rushed to claim \u201c\u200a \u2018defund the police\u2019 does not actually mean \u2018defund the \u00adpolice\u2019\u200a \u201d \u2014 a blatant bid to sugarcoat \u201cwhat a radical and politically explosive idea\u201d it is \u201cin an election year.\u201d For years, the media mocked Salena Zito\u2019s \u201cdescript<\/a>ion of Trump supporters who \u2018take him seriously, but not literally\u2019 \u200a\u201d \u2014 but now do the same with these protesters. More proof, McLaughlin sighs, that elites \u201cthink we can\u2019t see\u201d their blatant double standards.<\/p>\n

Tech beat: Facebook\u2019s Algorithms Are Drunk<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Mediaite, Sarah Rumpf is stunned that Facebook removed her post of a \u201clighthearted meme,\u201d claiming it could cause \u201cphysical harm.\u201d The meme shows the band The Cure and the words: \u201cI\u2019M NO EXPERT ON COVID-19, BUT THIS IS THE CURE.\u201d No sane person would think the \u00adEnglish rock band\u2019s \u201cmusical prowess conveys upon it any sort of medical expertise, but that didn\u2019t stop Facebook.\u201d When she tried to dispute the move, Facebook told her the censorship may be irreversible, owing to staffing shortages. Bottom line: \u201cEither Facebook\u2019s algorithms are drunk, or their human reviewers are the fussiest spoilsports on the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

2020 watch: \u2018Silent Minority\u2019 Could Help Trump<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rasmussen found that President Trump\u2019s approval rating among blacks has risen to 40 percent \u2014 \u201cafter a week of riots and nonstop Democrat and media attacks\u201d on him, observes Matt Mayer in Spectator USA. \u201cThere is a growing silent minority among America\u2019s minorities, especially African-Americans, in the cities where the recent rioting destroyed their businesses, homes and communities.\u201d Indeed, \u201cAfrican-Americans want law and order as much as anyone,\u201d and the \u201cleft\u2019s utter failure to condemn the rioting and looting as it applauded the \u2018defund-the-police\u2019 movement and funded bail for rioters won\u2019t sit well\u201d with blacks who \u201cwatched their communities get ravaged.\u201d Add in \u201cTrump\u2019s success in passing criminal-justice reform\u201d and \u201cdriving African-American unemployment to a historic low,\u201d and he could get enough black votes to \u201cmake it near impossible for Joe Biden to win\u201d key battleground states.<\/p>\n
