\n Some Like It Hot<\/em>, the musical comedy based on the classic MGM film, topped the Tony Awards nominations list with 13 nods. <\/p>\n

\n The musical, which features a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, was nominated for best musical, best original score, best book of a musical (written by Matthew L\u00f3pez & Amber Ruffin), best direction of a musical, as well as in the acting categories, with nominations for both Christian Borle and J. Harrison Ghee in the category of best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical, and for Kevin Del Aguila and NaTasha Yvette Williams in the featured roles categories. <\/p>\n

\n The plot, which has been revised from the 1959 film, sees two struggling jazz musicians, Borle and Ghee, on the run after witnessing a mob hit. The two disguise themselves within an all-female band and, as they travel<\/a> across the country, they explore their own identities, gender expression and what makes them happ<\/a>y. <\/p>\n

\n Lea Michele, currently starring in Funny Girl<\/em> on Broadway, and Myles Frost, who won a Tony Award in 2022 for his lead performance in MJ, <\/em>announced the nominations at Sofitel New York Tuesday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n Other top nominees are\u00a0the musicals & Juliet <\/em>(nine nominations), New York, New York <\/em>(also with nine) and Shucked <\/em>(with nine), followed by Kimberly Akimbo<\/em> (with eight). All are in competition for the Tony Award of best musical. These shows are followed by the musical revivals of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street <\/em>(eight nominations), Into the Woods<\/em> (six nominations), Parade<\/em> (six nominations), and the plays Ain\u2019t No Mo\u2019<\/em>, A Doll\u2019s House<\/em> and Leopoldstadt <\/em>(all with six nominations each).<\/p>\n

\n Hollywood names that earned recognition were Jessica Chastain (A Doll\u2019s House<\/em>), Jodie Comer (Prima Facie)<\/em>, Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford for their respective performances in Sweeney Todd<\/em>, Sara Bareilles (Into the Woods), <\/em>Samuel L. Jackson (August Wilson\u2019s The Piano Lesson<\/em>), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Suzan-Lori Parks\u2019 Topdog\/Underdog) <\/em>and Sean Hayes, Good Night, Oscar<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n Of the Tony honors being presented, Jerry Mitchell, a Broadway director and choreographer, will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his creation of Broadway Bares, which raises money for Broadway Cares\/Equity Fights AIDS. The 2023 <\/strong>Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre will be awarded to production stage manager, Lisa Dawn Cave; Victoria Bailey, executive director of the Theatre Development Fund, a nonprofit which expands access to theater, and theatrical accountant Robert Fried.<\/p>\n

\n Oscar winner and Tony nominee Ariana DeBose will return to host the 76th Annual Tony Awards on June 11. This year the ceremony is moving to the new location of the United Palace in New York City\u2019s Washington Heights. The show will be split into two parts, with the pre-show, entitled The Tony Awards: Act One, <\/em>airing live on Paramount Global\u2019s FAST platform, Pluto TV, from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. ET\/ 3:30-5:00 p.m. PT. The main ceremony will air on CBS, from 8 p.m.-11 p.m. ET\/5 p.m.- 8 p.m. PT and also stream live and on demand on Paramount+.<\/p>\n
