\n Eileen Saki, who portrayed Rosie, the sassy boss of the popular watering hole that hosted Hawkeye Pierce, Hot Lips Houlihan and others from the 4077th on the legendary series<\/a> M*A*S*H<\/em>, has died. She was 79.<\/p>\n

\n Saki died Monday in Los Angeles after a short illness, her rep, Camilla Fluxman Pines, told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n The delightful Saki app<\/a>eared as the owner of Rose\u2019s Bar \u2014 which actually existed in Seoul during the Korean War \u2014 on eight episodes of the CBS series from 1976 until its 1981 conclusion. (Frances Fong had played Rosie a couple of times in 1976-77.)<\/p>\n

\n Earlier, Saki had portrayed the head madam of a brothel impressed by Cpl. Klinger\u2019s (Jamie Farr) wardrobe on the show\u2019s fifth-season premiere episode, \u201cBug Out,\u201d which aired in September 1976.<\/p>\n

\n She also showed up on other TV series including Good Times<\/em>, CHiPs<\/em>, The Greatest American Hero<\/em>, Gimme a Break!<\/em> and Without a Trace<\/em> and in such films as Meteor<\/em> (1979), Mel Brooks\u2019 History of the World: Part I<\/em> (1981) and Ron Howard\u2019s Splash<\/em> (1984).<\/p>\n

\n Saki, who was born and raised in Japan, said she knew she would be a performer by the time she was 4. \u201cWe were very poor, and probably my psyche wanted me to be somebody else, to have a brighter and entertaining life,\u201d she said on a February 2022 episode of the M*A*S*H Matters<\/em> podcast co-hosted by Jeff Maxwell, who played Pvt. Igor Straminsky on the series.<\/p>\n

\n Her dad, who had worked in the theater in Japan and was a gardener in the U.S., put aside money for her to take singing and dancing lessons, she noted.<\/p>\n

\n Later, Saki read the Hollywood trades to learn the names of casting directors around town and snuck on the Fox lot, where she met M*A*S*H<\/em> writer, producer and director Burt Metcalfe, who hired her to play the Korean madam. A year later, she was cast as Rosie.<\/p>\n

\n The part \u201cwas written so well, I didn\u2019t have to really work on it,\u201d she said on the podcast. \u201cI just remember going to a Korean laundromat where the head lady was so [businesslike], and I based my character [on her].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n After finishing up an episode of M*A*S*H<\/em>, she walked past Brooks\u2019 office on the lot, she recalled. \u201cI thought, \u2018OK, take a breath, knock at the door and see if he is in.\u2019 \u2026 He was so sweet. I asked him, \u2018Do you have anything for me?\u2019 He said, \u2018Well, it\u2019s a little part.\u2019 It was the part of the slave girl in [History of the World<\/em>\u201c]. <\/p>\n

\n Survivors include her husband, Bob.<\/p>\n
