What to know about alleged attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/AP23123603681998-e1683139348889.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent drone attack on the Kremlin has spurred a global whodunit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moscow quickly accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin, a claim that was met with skepticism among Western officials and defense experts \u2014 and denied by Ukraine.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Unverified\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/yarotrof\/status\/1653726508739952641\">videos\u00a0that circulated online<\/a> Wednesday\u00a0purportedly\u00a0show the aftermath of the attack, which Russia says it thwarted by shooting down the drones.<\/p>\n<p>The attack will likely have a \u201crally around the flag\u201d effect in Russia, leading some to speculate it may be a \u201cfalse flag\u201d operation staged by the Kremlin to bolster support ahead of Victory Day on May 9, an annual holiday to celebrate the Soviet defeat of Nazis in WWII.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks to me like Putin and his handlers are constructing a fake provocation with this so-called terrorist attack that Russia can use as an excuse to rain down even more pain and suffering on the Ukrainian people or possibly use to justify an assassination attempt on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,\u201d said Beth Knobel, a former CBS bureau chief in Moscow and now a communications professor at Fordham University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkraine has nothing to gain by inflaming Russia further with an assassination attempt on President Putin,\u201d she added, noting that the claim of an assassination attempt was far-fetched, given Putin is widely known to reside at a complex outside Moscow.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Analysts have pointed out that there\u2019s no independent verification of the supposed attack. There\u2019s also scrutiny over why Moscow didn\u2019t report the incident until hours later or why the videos of it were not released for some time.<\/p>\n<p>Branislav Slantchev, a political <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> professor at a University of California, San Diego, who studies the conduct of war, also said he believes Russians were behind the attack, whether or not it was carried out with Putin\u2019s knowledge. He said it would help the Kremlin\u2019s recruitment drive across the country, while also renewing questions about Western support for the war if Ukraine is suspected of launching escalatory attacks inside Russia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe Russians will play up this card im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s mostly meant for domestic and international political use rather than anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zelensky on Wednesday denied that Ukraine was behind the\u00a0alleged\u00a0attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t attack Putin,\u201d he said at a press conference with Nordic leaders in Helsinki.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>His presidential adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, also said the Russian claims would give Moscow a pretext \u201cto justify massive strikes on Ukrainian cities, on the civilian population, on infrastructure facilities\u201d in the next several days.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of State Antony Blinken,\u00a0while speaking at a Washington Post event,\u00a0said he had seen the reports but could not comment on them \u201cwithout really knowing what the facts are.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He warned the public should \u201ctake anything coming out of the Kremlin with a very large shaker of salt.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Some experts were more open to the possibility of a Ukrainian attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mark Galeotti, a political scientist and historian who authored \u201cPutin\u2019s Wars: From Chechnya to Ukraine,\u201d said he believed\u00a0Putin\u00a0would want to avoid such an embarrassing\u00a0failure\u00a0of Russian security.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia would be admitting to a shocking breach of security,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/whats-the-truth-about-the-kremlin-drone-attack\/\">wrote in\u00a0The Spectator<\/a>, positing that Ukraine would have \u201cwanted to show\u00a0\u2026\u00a0that Moscow is not safe\u201d ahead of the patriotic Russian holiday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMost likely, this is just what it seems: that Kyiv, witnessing the continued attacks on its infrastructure, houses and hospitals, feels it has no reason to pull its punches,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state media on Wednesday that Russia reserved the right to respond to the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given that Russia regularly bombards Kyiv with missiles \u2014 including a barrage over the weekend \u2014 it\u2019s unclear what that response would look like.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Slantchev, political science professor, dismissed the argument that Russia would be embarrassed by the attack, saying\u00a0it would only feed the narrative that it is fighting a war against the more powerful militaries of the U.S. and other NATO powers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not shameful to be hit by a superior enemy. And in fact, they didn\u2019t achieve anything,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so this is not humiliation for Russia in any way that I can see. Which is why I simply do not see an upside for the Ukrainians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Capitol Hill on Wednesday, lawmakers were dubious about the Russian reports, but said they were awaiting more information.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to opine on the veracity of it because the Kremlin \u2014 I wouldn\u2019t trust half of what they say,\u201d Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a war going on. There\u2019s been plenty of strikes in Kyiv. In the end, if you invade a country and they fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) said many questions remained unanswered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have to verify \u2014 and through the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> that we have, a sense of what happened? Were drones launched? Did the Russians use anti-aircraft defenses to bring them down? What was the target?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think within the next 24 hours we\u2019ll get an indication of what they\u2019ve [administration] untangled from the data they looked at.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed that defense leaders had seen the press reporting \u201cbut have nothing to provide at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the verdict is still out,\u201d said Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant defense secretary, who is now a national security analyst with ABC.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he said he was confident that U.S. intelligence agencies would figure it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can always go back and look at satellite imagery, even signals collection, when it comes to people talking about watching something like this, whether it was a false flag type of thing, or whether it was the actual attack by Ukraine,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mulroy noted a couple of initial observations that supported suspicions of Russia\u2019s involvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Turkish drones commonly used by Ukraine\u00a0can only <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> about 150 miles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter where you\u2019re shooting it from in Ukraine, you would have to go at least 300 miles,\u201d he said, adding that the possibility of a Ukrainian operation inside Russia was unlikely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And the video of the attack that quickly circulated shows someone wanted the attack to be seen widely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould somebody be up for some reason or another filming the Kremlin at 2 a.m. from their house?\u201d he said. \u201cI guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Al Weaver contributed to this story.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
