Armed with an elegant weapon for a more civilised age, many of us have fantasised about cutting a bright green (or blue) swathe across a galaxy far, far away. Disney even released a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US10065127B1\/en\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/patents.google.com\/patent\/US10065127B1\/en&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1683277082676000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2IUPkprQdfwbhFsU0vgVtU\">patent<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in 2018 for one such device, although \u2018Sword device with retractable, internally illuminated blade,\u2019 doesn\u2019t quite evoke images of cutting through blast doors or droid armour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That begs the question on this<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starwars.com\/star-wars-day\"><span>Star<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Wars<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>Day<\/a>: is it actually possible to build a lightsaber, and if so, how far away from holding it in our hands and whistling <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=D_2bluVPsb0\">\u2018Duel of Fates\u2019<\/a> are we? The answer might surprise you \u2014but first, we\u2019ll have to set out exactly what we mean when we say lightsaber and learn some <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> on the way.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_what_would_you_need_to_make_a_lightsaber_as_we_know_it\"><\/span>So what would you need to make a lightsaber as we know it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are six fundamental boxes a lightsaber must tick: it must light up and glow when in use, it must be able to cut through an object, it must be retractable, it must make a trademark whooshing noise, you must be able to cross them in a fight, and most importantly, it must obey the rule of cool. The bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that not all of these are possible at once \u2014 yet \u2014 but the good news is that all of them are already possible individually \u2014 at least, in theory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst we don\u2019t have access to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.starwars.com\/databank\/lightsaber-crystal\">Kyber Crystals<\/a> in our galaxy, the laws of physics make more than a fine substitute. The first problem to tackle is the light and cutting edge, and for that, we can utilise the physical principle of laminar flow. Whilst we may be tempted to use a rocket-grade propellant and fuel, the reality is that something simple like the liquid propane used in BBQs is more than enough. With these ingredients; BBQ fuel, and a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2012\/07\/24\/create-a-laminar-flow-jet-wthout-pesky-fiber-optics\/\">laminar flow jet<\/a>, the task simply becomes one of tuning the fuel mix and valves to get a retractable blade. While <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwelsh.sdsu.edu\/~wwelsh\/CLASSES\/ASTROBIO\/LECTURES\/wien_law.pdf\">Wien\u2019s Displacement law<\/a> states that the temperature of an object is directly related to its colour, this won\u2019t give us the intense colour we usually associate with this aspect of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Star<span>\u00a0<span>Wars<\/span><\/span>\u00a0universe<\/span>. Instead, by introducing small amounts of specific chemical compounds at the end of the hilt, we can influence the colour. By burning strontium metal for example, we can achieve that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/32645-darth-vader-marvel-comic-reveals-sith-red-lightsabers\">iconic Sith red<\/a> or potassium chloride for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/starwars.fandom.com\/wiki\/Mace_Windu%27s_lightsaber\/Legends\">Mace Windu purple<\/a>. The intense glow of the lightsaber will come from the heat of the plasma generated by the fuel-oxidiser mix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This still leaves us the issue of being able to cross them in a duel, which necessitates a resistance to temperatures high enough to melt a blast door. At present, the material with the highest melting temperature is the Tantalum hafnium carbide alloy (Ta<sub>4<\/sub>HfC<sub>5<\/sub>), which melts at a whopping 3990 \u00b0C. This unfortunately is the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roximate temperature of burning liquid propane. When making something retractable, you also introduce small weaknesses in a metal, which makes fractures and failures more likely. Therefore, even when working with ultra-heat-resistant materials, appropriate care is needed to keep the material from failing due to stress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that any plan to build a lightsaber you can duel with needs to involve not only a heat-resistant material, but a robust one as well.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_close_are_we_to_being_able_to_wield_the_favoured_weapon_of_the_Jedi\"><\/span>How close are we to being able to wield the favoured weapon of the Jedi?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main stumbling blocks to us waving around a screen-accurate lightsaber: the fuel and the duel. Assuming that we\u2019re still following the principle of laminar flow mentioned above, we can achieve a steel-melting, glowing beam by finding a fuel with a high density, and a high burning temperature. The former we want so we can keep the fuel in a nice little rechargeable cylinder, like a battery, and the latter so we can melt through the blast doors of any would-be rebels.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetylene or rocket-grade kerosene could be good candidates, with acetylene being used in plasma cutters and kerosene having put men on the moon in the Apollo programme. Yet, these still don\u2019t quite fit the bill. Acetylene isn\u2019t dense enough to be stored in a battery, and you would need a large tank of it to power a lightsaber for any amount of time. My guess for realising this design would be a central core of a high-melting-point material, like Tantalum hafnium carbide alloy, which can be telescopically extended with the high-temperature flame from the propellant and fuel mixture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that modern science is making leaps and bounds in this area. Ongoing research into high-density, energy-rich fuels and stress-resilient materials means that we\u2019re now closer than ever to producing a real-life lightsaber.
