{"id":573075,"date":"2023-05-04T22:02:01","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T19:02:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/omb-director-says-short-term-debt-ceiling-extension-possible\/"},"modified":"2023-05-04T22:02:01","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T19:02:01","slug":"omb-director-says-short-term-debt-ceiling-extension-possible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/omb-director-says-short-term-debt-ceiling-extension-possible\/","title":{"rendered":"#OMB director says short-term debt ceiling extension possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/03\/youngshalanda_031523ag05_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The White House is not taking the possibility of a short-term debt ceiling extension off the table as it weighs options to avoid the country defaulting on its debts as President Biden prepares to meet Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on the matter next week.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young told reporters at the White House that extending the debt ceiling was \u201cone of the things on the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure one of the things on the table we will have to work through is how long. I\u2019m not going to take anything off the table,\u201d Young said when asked about a possible short-term extension.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting scheduled for Tuesday, which will also include Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and\u00a0Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), was solidified this week after the Treasury Department identified June 1 as a drop-dead deadline for the debt ceiling before the country defaults on trillions of dollars of loans.<\/p>\n<p>The president plans to warn congressional leaders about the risk of a default, reiterating his stance that a debt limit should be increased without provisions but House Republicans have demanded that an increase must also come with millions in spending cut agreements.<\/p>\n<p>When asked again if an extension is off the table, Young said, \u201cright now, remember where our debate is. We\u2019re in the take it or leave it phase,\u201d referring to the Republicans\u2019 stance on the meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would love to be in that part of the conversation,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved debt ceiling plan that McCarthy will bring to the table on Tuesday involves raising the borrowing limit along with sweeping spending cuts. Biden does not support pairing the two.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Young, though, added, she has \u201chope that we will find a path to avoid default.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe the majority of members of Congress know that is the wrong path to go down. Look, we saw the partisan process play out, now we need to pivot to a bipartisan process,\u201d she said. \u201cCongress can put a bill on the floor tomorrow, avoid default. The D.C. drama, the political brinkmanship, that\u2019s what that is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Young also bashed the GOP plan, warning it would mean less funding for veterans, cancer research, and other areas, echoing what the White House\u2019s stance has been on the bill since it was released. She said that in Tuesday\u2019s meeting, Biden will stress that the focus needs to be on raising the debt limit, not spending cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI can probably write the bill for them in five minutes, it\u2019s pretty easy,\u201d she quipped, adding that it is \u201cmade up drama.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Tuesday\u00a0appeared to leave some room\u00a0for the possibility of supporting a short-term suspension or extension as a way to avoid a default but said she \u201cwon\u2019t negotiate in public on any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House has sidestepped questions over whether Biden might decide to invoke the 14<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0amendment, which would allow the president to unilaterally avoid a default without needing Congress\u2019 approval.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But that hasn\u2019t stopped the White House from laying all the responsibility on the legislative branch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is Congress\u2019 duty to do and we will continue to say that,\u201d Young said about the notion.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Thursday, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines warned that China and Russia would\u00a0likely exploit the \u201copportunity\u201d\u00a0a U.S. government debt default would present.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Young told reporters that she agrees with Haines, adding that \u201cthey love to see chaos in the American system. They love to see that we can\u2019t do our basic jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes democracy still work or does the Chinese way work?
