{"id":573254,"date":"2023-05-06T04:56:17","date_gmt":"2023-05-06T01:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mcconnell-warns-he-wont-back-debt-ceiling-increase-without-substantive-reforms\/"},"modified":"2023-05-06T04:56:17","modified_gmt":"2023-05-06T01:56:17","slug":"mcconnell-warns-he-wont-back-debt-ceiling-increase-without-substantive-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mcconnell-warns-he-wont-back-debt-ceiling-increase-without-substantive-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"#McConnell warns he won\u2019t back debt-ceiling increase without \u2018substantive\u2019 reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/04\/mcconnellmitch_042623gn03_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has signed onto a letter stating he and more than 40 members of the Senate GOP conference will not back \u201cany bill that raises the debt ceiling without substantive spending and budget reforms,\u201d according to sources.<\/p>\n<p>The letter is addressed to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and would be McConnell\u2019s clearest statement to date about what he is willing to support to avoid a national default next month when the federal government is projected to run out of money.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe Senate Republican conference is united behind the House Republican conference in support of spending cuts and structural budget reform as a starting point for negotiations on the debt ceiling,\u201d the letter states. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs such, we will not be voting for cloture on any bill that raises the debt ceiling without substantive spending and budget reforms,\u201d it warns.<\/p>\n<p>The letter is being led by conservative Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), who wants to ensure that Republicans can sustain a filibuster of a clean bill to raise the debt ceiling, which is what Democrats are demanding. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A source familiar with the effort confirmed that more than 40 GOP senators have already signed on, including McConnell\u2019s entire leadership team. <\/p>\n<p>McConnell has worked behind the scenes to gin up support for the letter, the source said.<\/p>\n<p>His office declined to comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The signatories include Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.), Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso (Wyo.), Policy Committee Chairwoman Joni Ernst (Iowa), Conference Vice Chairwoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (Mont.).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McConnell, who worked out a deal with Senate Democrats in 2021 to raise the debt limit, has previously said the current debt-limit negotiations should be handled entirely by President Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this situation, and I\u2019ve been a through a few of these debt-ceiling dramas, there is no solution in the Senate. We have divided government,\u201d he told reporters on Tuesday. \u201cThe American people gave the Republicans the House, the Democrats have the presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe president and the Speaker need to reach an agreement to get us past this impasse,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), an adviser to the Senate leadership,\u00a0said last week: \u201cThe Senate\u2019s going to sit this one out.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Now McConnell is throwing his weight behind House Republican demands that Biden and Democrats agree to significant fiscal reforms in exchange for raising the debt limit \u2014 something that Biden and Schumer have so far refused to discuss. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The development comes ahead of a May 9 meeting at the White House where McConnell, Schumer, McCarthy and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) are expected to begin their first serious discussion on how to avoid default. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen\u00a0warned\u00a0congressional leaders Monday that the country could soon exhaust the extraordinary measures her department has employed since January to stave off what many experts warn would be an economic catastrophe. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She warned that \u201cour best estimate is that we will be unable to continue to satisfy all of the government\u2019s obligations by early June, and potentially as early as June 1, if Congress does not raise or suspend the debt limit before that time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Biden in an interview with MSNBC\u2019s Stephanie Ruhle that aired Friday night called McCarthy, the principal negotiator on a deal, \u201can honest man\u201d but suggested the GOP leader would have a hard to selling a potential debt ceiling deal to his conservative caucus, especially after his protracted bid for Speaker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s the Republican Party and there\u2019s the MAGA Republicans, and the MAGA Republicans really have put him in a position where in order to stay Speaker he has to agree \u2014 he\u2019s agreed to things that, maybe he believes, but are just extreme,\u201d the president said in the interview for \u201cThe 11th Hour on MSNBC.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Biden also demurred on possibly invoking the \u201cpublic debt\u201d clause of the 14th Amendment, which has been\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/02\/us\/politics\/debt-limit-14th-amendment.html\">floated by some legal scholars<\/a>\u00a0as overriding the nation\u2019s congressionally <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved borrowing limit, essentially compelling the government to continue to make payments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve not gotten there yet,\u201d Biden said when asked about potentially invoking the amendment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The president said he is \u201cprepared to negotiate in detail\u201d with Republicans\u2019 budget but declared \u201cthere\u2019s no possibility they can pass their budget, zero.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Republican letter states \u201cour economy is in free fall due to unsustainable fiscal policies\u201d and declares \u201cthis trajectory must be addressed with fiscal reforms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, recent Treasury projections have reinforced the urgency of addressing the debt ceiling,\u201d it reads. \u201cThe House has taken a responsible first step in coming to the table with their proposals.
