Some await our robot overlords with rapturous excitement; others anticipate a digital apocalypse.<\/p>\n<p>The divergence stems from varied motivations: personal perspectives, vested interests, and the ambiguity of what exactly constitutes artificial <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis defines it as \u201chuman-level cognition\u201d \u2014 and his opinion carries weight. Hassabis has made the London-based DeepMind one of the world\u2019s leading AI labs, with building AGI as its core mission.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">\u201cThe progress has been pretty incredible.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This week, the former chess prodigy and video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> pioneer revealed his own expectations on AGI\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe progress in the last few years has been pretty incredible,\u201d Hassabis said on Tuesday at t<span>he Wall Street Journal\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/michelle-obama-ford-ceo-and-panel-on-press-freedom-are-featured-at-the-wsj-future-of-everything-festival-3b45eb8f?mod=article_inline\" data-type=\"link\">Future of Everything Festival<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t see any reason why that progress is going to slow down. I think it may even accelerate. But what about his fellow tech luminaries? Here\u2019s what they predict.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Geoffrey_Hinton_%E2%80%94_Turing_Award-winner_and_ex-Googler\"><\/span><span>Geoffrey Hinton \u2014 Turing Award-winner and ex-Googler<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>Geoffrey Hinton is so concerned about AI that he quit Google to warn about the field\u2019s risks. In the wake of his departure, Hinton made a fresh prediction on when AI will surpass human intelligence. Ominously<\/span>, t<span>he deep learning legend dramatically<\/span>\u00a0accelerated his original forecast of 30-50 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI now predict five to 20 years but without much confidence,\u201d he said on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. \u201cWe live in very uncertain times. It\u2019s possible that I am totally wrong about digital intelligence overtaking us. Nobody really knows which is why we should worry now.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Geoffrey Hinton (@geoffreyhinton) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/geoffreyhinton\/status\/1653687894534504451?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ray_Kurzweil_%E2%80%94_author_inventor_executive_and_futurist\"><\/span><span>Ray Kurzweil \u2014 author, inventor, executive, and futurist<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Ray Kurzweil, a fabled futurist, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wondriumdaily.com\/ray-kurzweils-crazy-yet-somewhat-precise-predictions-about-the-future\/\">loves making predictions<\/a> \u2014 and they\u2019re admirably precise. <span>At the 2017 <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"underline hover:text-futurism hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sxsw.com\/\">SXSW Conference<\/a><span> in Austin, Texas, Kurzweil gave a typically pinpoint prediction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy 2029, computers will have human-level intelligence,\u201d he said. \u201cThat leads to computers having human intelligence, our putting them inside our brains, connecting them to the cloud, expanding who we are. Today, that\u2019s not just a future scenario. It\u2019s here, in part, and it\u2019s going to accelerate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ben_Goertzel_%E2%80%94_CEO_at_SingularityNET_and_chief_scientist_at_Hanson_Robotics\"><\/span><strong>Ben Goertzel \u2014 CEO at SingularityNET and chief scientist at Hanson Robotics<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A divisive figure in tech circles, Ben Goertzel helped popularise the term AGI. He\u2019s also prone to bold pronouncements about <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>\u2019s future. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/human-level-artificial-intelligence-agi\">At a conference in 2018<\/a>, he added a couple more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we need fundamentally new algorithms,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we do need to connect our algorithms in different ways than we do now. What could possibly go wrong?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c[The Singularity] is just 30 years away, if the trend doesn\u2019t break, and there will be rather cheap computational devices that have as many connections as your brain but are much faster,\u201d he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/father-artificial-intelligence-singularity-decades-away\">told Futurism <\/a>in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"keep-in-mind-that-ai-researchers-were-over-optimistic-before\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yoshua_Bengio_%E2%80%94_professor_of_computer_science_at_the_University_of_Montreal\"><\/span>Yoshua Bengio \u2014 professor of computer science at the University of Montreal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Like his friend and fellow Turing Award-winner Yann LeCunn, Bengio prefers the term \u201chuman-level intelligence\u201d to \u201cAGI.\u201d Regardless, he\u2019s sceptical about predictions for its advent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s plausible that we could really know when, how many years, how many decades, it will take to reach human-level AI,\u201d Bengio <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gen-zai.org\/en\/media\/thinking-yoshua-bengio-01\/\">told Professor <\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"url fn n\" title=\"View all posts by Toshie Takahashi\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.harvard.edu\/toshietakahashi\/author\/ttakahashi\/\">Toshie Takahashi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Herbert_A_Simon_%E2%80%94_AI_pioneer\"><\/span>Herbert A. Simon \u2014 AI pioneer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A founding father of AI, Herbert A. Simon has the earliest forecast on our list. The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14584993\/#:~:text=In%201978%2C%20Herbert%20A.,psychological%20ideas%20to%20economic%20theorizing.\">Nobel Prize-winner<\/a> once went so far as to estimate that AGI would arrive by <em>1985<\/em>. In fairness, he did make that guess back in 1965. <span>\u201cMachines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work a man can do,\u201d Simon said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Simon\u2019s guess shows what a fickle game tech predictions can be. <\/span>If you think you could do better, let us know via the usual channels \u2014 but do it soon, because the clock is ticking down quickly.
