\n Richard Dreyfuss is criticizing the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s\u2019 new diversity and inclusion requirements.<\/p>\n

\n The Jaws<\/em> actor told Margaret Hoover on Friday\u2019s episode of PBS\u2019 Firing Line<\/em><\/a> that the minimum requirements films will have to meet related to representation and inclusion to be eligible for the best picture Oscar \u201cmake me vomit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis is an art form,\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s also a form of commerce, and it makes money, but it\u2019s an art. And no one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest, most current idea of what morality is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n In 2020, the Academy announced that it would start rolling out inclusivity standards in 2021 \u201cto encourage equitable representation on and off screen in order to better reflect the diversity of the movie-going audience.\u201d And beginning in 2024, films will have to meet minimum requirements to be considered for the best picture category. <\/p>\n

\n Dreyfuss, who won an Oscar 1978 for best actor in a leading role for The Goodbye Girl<\/em>, added, \u201cAnd what are we risking? Are we really risking hurting people\u2019s feelings? You can\u2019t legislate that. And you have to let life be life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The American Graffiti<\/em> actor then proceeded to defend Laurence Olivier\u2019s performance in the 1965 film Othello<\/em>, in which Olivier played the Shakespeare lead role in blackface.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe played a Black man brilliantly,\u201d Dreyfuss told Hoover. \u201cAm I being told that I will never have a chance to play a Black man? Is someone else being told that if they\u2019re not Jewish, they shouldn\u2019t play The Merchant of Venice<\/em>? Are we crazy? Do we not know that art is art? This is so patronizing. It\u2019s so, it\u2019s so thoughtless, and treating people like children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Hoover followed up by asking the Close Encounters of the Third Kind<\/em> actor if \u201cThere\u2019s a difference between the question of representation and who is allowed to represent other groups? \u2026 And the case of blackface, explicitly in this country, given the history of slavery and the sensitivities around Black racism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n He responded, \u201cThere shouldn\u2019t be. \u2026 Because it\u2019s patronizing. Because it says we\u2019re so fragile that we can\u2019t have our feelings hurt. We have to anticipate having our feelings hurt, our children\u2019s feelings hurt. We don\u2019t know how to stand up and bop the bully in the face.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
