{"id":573773,"date":"2023-05-09T21:00:40","date_gmt":"2023-05-09T18:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mccarthy-shoots-down-short-term-debt-ceiling-hike\/"},"modified":"2023-05-09T21:00:40","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T18:00:40","slug":"mccarthy-shoots-down-short-term-debt-ceiling-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mccarthy-shoots-down-short-term-debt-ceiling-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"#McCarthy shoots down short-term debt ceiling hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/mccarthykevin_042623gn14_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday shot down the idea of moving a short-term debt ceiling hike to prevent a government default.<\/p>\n<p>Just hours before McCarthy is scheduled to meet with President Biden on the issue, the Speaker said the sides should come together to negotiate a compromise \u2014\u00a0combining a debt ceiling increase with sharp spending cuts \u2014\u00a0rather than punt the debate to a later day.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t kick the vote,\u201d McCarthy told reporters in the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>The sentiment is shared by the White House and other congressional leaders in both parties, who are scrambling to secure a bipartisan compromise that will prevent the first default in the country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>The debt limit debate has gained urgency over the last week after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned the department could exhaust its ability to pay all the country\u2019s obligations as early as June 1.<\/p>\n<p>Yellen\u2019s announcement prompted Biden to call Tuesday\u2019s 4 p.m. meeting at the White House, which will also feature Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the gathering, however, the sides are no closer to a deal than they were in the first week of February, when Biden and McCarthy last met face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are insisting that any increase in the Treasury\u2019s borrowing cap must be accompanied by steep cuts designed to curb deficit spending \u2014\u00a0the phenomenon that has, over decades, ballooned the national debt to more than $31 trillion. House Republicans last month had passed a debt ceiling hike that included cuts to federal programs estimated to reduce deficit spending by roughly $4.8 trillion over a decade.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Biden, however, has rejected the idea of marrying the two issues. The president has argued that because lifting the debt ceiling simply empowers the government to pay debts <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved by Congress in the past, the cap should be lifted as a \u201cclean\u201d standalone bill, and the parties can haggle over deficit reduction strategies as part of separate negotiations on federal funding, which must be extended by Sept. 30 to prevent a partial government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>The impasse has raised the odds that party leaders will need to seek a temporary suspension of the debt ceiling to prevent a default and allow the sides more time to negotiate.
