Jean Carroll verdict"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/CarrollEJean_TrumpDonald_050923_KaplanHeckerandFinkviaAP_JohnMinchilloAP.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Republicans are divided over whether former President Trump\u2019s 2024 reelection chances could be hurt following a verdict reached Tuesday in a case involving writer E. Jean Carroll.<\/p>\n<p>A federal jury in Manhattan found Trump liable of sexual abuse and defamation against Carroll, awarding her $5 million in damages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In a lawsuit filed last year, Carroll accused the former president of raping her in 1996 in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room, though the jury did not find Trump liable of rape in the trial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some Republicans pointed to the verdict as reason to move on from the former president.<\/p>\n<p>Republican strategist Doug Heye tweeted that Trump\u2019s statement \u201cshould be more ammunition for Republicans to dump Trump once and for all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alyssa Farah Griffin, who served as Trump\u2019s White House communications director and is now a frequent critic of the former president, tweeted that the GOP \u201cmust walk away from this man. It is beyond morally indefensible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The verdict comes just one day before the former president is scheduled to take questions at a CNN town hall \u2014 the first time Trump has done an interview with a major non-conservative network since 2020 \u2014 and weeks after Trump was indicted on federal charges by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D) in a separate probe.<\/p>\n<p>Republican strategists offered mixed views on the effects of the verdict on Trump\u2019s election chances.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt certainly won\u2019t help among the suburban women that were with Trump in 2016, but abandoned him in 2018, 2020 and 2022,\u201d Arizona-based GOP strategist and Trump campaign alumnus Brian Seitchik said in a text message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump was able to justifiably portray the [Bragg] indictment as political. Will he be able to do the same here? That\u2019s the key question for this week,\u201d Seitchik said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has denied the accusations, and his campaign has vowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal the case.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The former president also reacted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> on his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> platform Tuesday, calling the verdict \u201ca disgrace.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have absolutely no idea who this woman is,\u201d Trump said. \u201cA continuation of the greatest witchhunt of all time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of Trump\u2019s 2024 Republican rivals offered mixed reactions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Vivek Ramaswamy, an investment manager seeking the GOP presidential nomination, said the verdict seemed like \u201cjust another part of the establishment\u2019s anaphylactic response against its chief political allergen: Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R), a candidate who has been critical of Trump, called for the verdict to be taken seriously.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the course of my over 25 years of experience in the courtroom, I have seen firsthand how a cavalier and arrogant contempt for the rule of law can backfire,\u201d Hutchinson said. \u201cThe jury verdict should be treated with seriousness and is another example of the indefensible behavior of Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But some Republicans argued that Tuesday\u2019s verdict will only strengthen the former president\u2019s standing among his base.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrump has a base that will stick with him through thick and thin, and trying to use today\u2019s ruling against him will do nothing to dampen the resolve of his supporters,\u201d said Ford O\u2019Connell, a Florida-based Republican strategist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Veteran Republican strategist Keith Naughton said the Tuesday verdict wouldn\u2019t have a substantial impact on Trump\u2019s 2024 bid.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Naughton said possible indictments in separate probes\u00a0into Trump\u2019s conduct during the 2020 election,\u00a0headed by the Justice Department and Fulton County (Ga.) District Attorney Fani Willis, would be more significant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, Naughton suggested that Trump\u2019s response \u2014 and whether he brings it up regularly \u2014 could impact his standing with women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think where this really hurts him is in his reaction, just another thing for him to rage about. And when he goes on appeal \u2026 it could make it worse,\u201d Naughton said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe tends to make things worse for himself.\u00a0[The wild card is],\u00a0does he keep bringing this up in the future? If he does, it could hurt him more with women, which is already a weak group for him,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Just\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2021\/06\/30\/behind-bidens-2020-victory\/\">44 percent of women<\/a> voted for Trump in the 2020 election, while 55 percent voted for President Biden.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are reasons to remain skeptical that Trump will face a political backlash in the immediate future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laws of political gravity don\u2019t seem to apply to President Trump,\u201d said one official who advised Trump\u2019s 2016 and 2020 campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>While the Carroll verdict is the first time Trump\u2019s myriad personal legal troubles has led to a conviction, it is far from the only cloud looming over his third White House bid.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, he was charged with 34 felony counts for his\u00a0alleged role in a hush money scheme involving adult-film star<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Stormy Daniels in the final weeks of the 2016 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>A Justice Department special counsel is simultaneously investigating Trump\u2019s efforts to remain in power after the 2020 election and whether he improperly handled classified documents after leaving the White House.<\/p>\n<p>And a Georgia prosecutor is looking into Trump\u2019s efforts to overturn the state\u2019s 2020 election results.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, Trump has retained a healthy lead in national polls of GOP primary voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Morning Consult poll released early Tuesday showed Trump with a 41-point lead over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R). An ABC News\/Washington Post poll released Sunday showed Trump with a 28-point lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump campaign and its allies have been adamant that Trump\u2019s legal woes will only reinforce his support within the Republican primary electorate, which views the various investigations into the former president as an attempt to target him and bring him down.<\/p>\n<p>The greater concern, which even some of Trump\u2019s allies acknowledge, is whether the accumulation of legal problems and scandals will ultimately drive away independent voters in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> election against Biden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
