She suggests using <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:13;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southernliving.com\/food\/kitchen-assistant\/microfiber-cleaning-cloth\" data-ylk=\"slk:microfiber cloths;cpos:13;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">microfiber cloths<\/a> and dish soap. \u201cMix warm water and a few drops of dish soap or mild cleaner in a small spray bottle,\u201d she says. \u201cMist the stainless-steel surface with a light coating of the spray and using a soft microfiber cloth, wipe off the dish soap mixture in the direction of the grain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The way you clean is important to avoid damaging stainless steel. \u201cTo prevent scratching and improve shine, always clean in the direction of the grain, she says. \u201cStainless steel has faint lines that are called the grain.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wood\"><\/span>Wood<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bleach and wood don\u2019t go together so make sure to avoid this harsh chemical on any wood surface, whether it\u2019s cutting boards or wood floors. Once you use bleach on any type of wood, it\u2019s near impossible to remove. \u201cThe porous nature of wood will only absorb the bleach, and you can\u2019t safely remove it or rinse it,&#8221; says Mehas. &#8220;Not only will it continue to erode over time, it\u2019s also dangerous for hands, feet, or the furry paws of your lovable pet!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not use bleach on wooden surfaces,\u201d says Townsend. \u201cBleach can cause discoloration, weaken the wood fibers, and damage the finish of the wood.\u201d <\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Clean-3\"><\/span>How to Clean<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cUse a gentle cleaner specifically designed for wood,\u201d says Townsend. \u201cBe sure to wring out the cleaning cloth well to avoid water damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And if you\u2019re cleaning a wooden floor, how you clean will depend on if the wood floor is sealed or unsealed. \u201cTo clean sealed wood floors, mop with a mix of \u00bc cup of mild or pH-neutral soap with water in a bucket,\u201d says Mock. \u201cWith unsealed wood floors, you should only sweep, dust mop or vacuum regularly, being careful not to use water.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Grout\"><\/span>Grout<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Noticing moldy grout lines lining the shower or bathtub? Sure, <em>you think, I\u2019ll just pour some bleach on the grout lines and problem solved<\/em>. Stop right there. Bleach may make the grout lines look better but it won\u2019t get to the bottom of the problem. \u201cWhile bleach can brighten the area and kill the mold at the surface, it doesn\u2019t get to the roots of the mold,\u201d says Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Wondering what an alternative to bleach is? She suggests combining baking soda and water in bowl to make a paste and then scrub the area with a sponge.<\/p>\n<p>However, if there is a lot of mold, contact a mold professional, she says.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Colored_Fabrics_or_Paint\"><\/span>Colored Fabrics or Paint<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever accidentally used bleach on a printed tee or an entire load of colored clothing, you know that bleach permanently stains. Have a tough stain? Bleach is not the solution. \u201cDo not use bleach near or on colored fabrics, painted surfaces, or any surface susceptible to discoloration and damage,\u201d says Townsend.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Areas_Where_Children_and_Pets_Play\"><\/span>Areas Where Children and Pets Play<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Bleach is a powerful chemical so it\u2019s important to use it in areas where kids and furry friends won\u2019t be exposed to it or touch it. Think about where your children or pets spend time or play and make sure not to use bleach in these areas of the home. \u201cChildren and pets are more likely to accidentally ingest bleach from surfaces from touching toys or other areas where bleach has been used, or from pets licking paws on a bleached floor or area,\u201d explains Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Having a clean home is important but it\u2019s equally important that it\u2019s healthy and safe.
