\n A white South Carolina police officer said the N-word at least twice during a confrontation outside a bar, video shows.<\/p>\n

Footage posted to Twitter<\/a> of the incident late Saturday in the Five Points section of Columbia shows Columbia Police Sgt. Chad Walker using the racial slur at least two times, claiming it was previously directed at him.<\/p>\n

A video starts with a man outside Bar None \u2014 where Walker spotted several people violating Gov. Henry McMaster\u2019s executive order to stop the service and consumption of alcohol after 11 p.m. \u2014 accusing the officer of \u201ctalking to these people of color as if they\u2019re less than human.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people of color?\u201d Walker replies. \u201cThe gentleman right there that called me a n\u2014-r? That guy, that just called me a n\u2014-r?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you serious?\u201d another man is overheard saying.<\/p>\n

The black man Walker had accused then claims he did not use the slur, while the sergeant insists he did, saying it was caught on his police body-cam. Several others, including other officers, watch the exchange, video shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes sir, you did,\u201d Walker tells the man. \u201cYou got mad because I told you you couldn\u2019t drink your drink, so you called me that word.\u201d<\/p>\n

A woman then nudges the man away from Walker \u2014 a 14-year department vet \u2014 after he asked the sergeant to repeat the slur again, video shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d the officer continues. \u201cAll you\u2019re doing is calling me ignorant. That\u2019s what that word means. If you\u2019d like to call yourself ignorant, keep saying it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another clip, Walker can be heard yelling that the man called him the N-word.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho cares what color I am?!\u201d Walker said, the clip shows. \u201cHe called me that word, nobody was called that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Columbia police said in a tweet early Sunday that Walker\u2019s behavior was \u201cinexcusable and completely inconsistent\u201d with its values while promising an investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are better than his actions,\u201d department officials said.<\/p>\n

Columbia Police Chief W. H. \u201cSkip\u201d Holbrook announced later Sunday that Walker had been suspended without pay for his actions during the heated exchange. Holbrook also apologized for the sergeant\u2019s \u201cinapp<\/a>ropriate [and] disrespectful\u201d actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter reviewing the video from last night in Five Points, it is evident the actions of Sgt. Walker were a clear failure to fulfill the expectations and standards of our department,\u201d Holbrook said in a statement. \u201cThe repetition of the racial slur and failure to deescalate the situation were inexcusable.\u201d<\/p>\n

While embarrassed by Walker\u2019s actions, Holbrook said he was pleased that another officer intervened and removed him from the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Columbia Police Department will continue to work to earn the trust of the community that it serves,\u201d police said in a statement. \u201cThe actions exhibited [Saturday] are not a true representation of the courageous CPD men and women who proudly wear the police uniform. We will be accountable to the public we serve.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
