\n Once Upon A One More Time<\/em> is one of Britney Spears\u2019 first official projects following the termination of her 13-year conservatorship. <\/p>\n

\n Helmed by directors and choreographers Keone and Mari Madrid, with an original story by Jon Hartmere, the musical comedy is slated to open on June 22 at the Marquis Theater and will feature hits like \u201cOops I Did It Again,\u201d \u201cLucky,\u201d \u201cCircus\u201d and \u201cToxic.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Ahead of its Broadway run, Once Upon a One More Time<\/em> had made several attempts at a pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago beginning in 2019 before it made its eventual world premiere in December 2021 at Washington, D.C.\u2019s\u00a0Shakespeare Theatre Company \u2014\u00a0nearly half a year before a Los Angeles judge officially ended Spears\u2019 conservatorship. <\/p>\n

\n While the singer was reportedly present for an early reading in 2019, and gave a statement to Playbill<\/em> calling it \u201ca dream come true for me,\u201d questions remained about the level of her involvement and consent to the use of her music at a time when she had said other elements of her life \u2014 including her finances and reproductive health choices \u2014\u00a0were being controlled by her father, Jamie Spears.<\/p>\n

\n Now, as those questions continue to swirl, how much involvement the princess of pop had in the lead-up to the musical\u2019s Broadway run is being clarified. Ahead of the show\u2019s first preview on Saturday, producers James L. Nederlander and Hunter Arnold confirmed that Once Upon A One More Time<\/em> is fully authorized and licensed by Britney Spears, and that the license agreement was negotiated, agreed to and signed post-conservatorship by the Grammy-winner in 2022. <\/p>\n

\n The musical was also based on an idea the pop star had suggested, and created in collaboration with Spears. The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> has reached out to a rep for Spears for comment. <\/p>\n

\n When the musical\u2019s Broadway run was first announced on the singer\u2019s 41st birthday, the show was simply billed as having been inspired by music performed and recorded by Spears, who was otherwise not known to be involved. A rep for the musical also told THR<\/em> all the musical compositions in the show were licensed through their publishers with the app<\/a>roval of the songwriters. (It was previously unclear who could authorize the use of Spears music under her conservatorship.)<\/p>\n

\n And before the musical\u2019s D.C. run in 2021, Hartmere said he was \u201cgiven access to all of Spears\u2019s songs,\u201d according to an\u00a0interview with The Washington<\/em> Post<\/em>. \u201cThe only thing I was told was that she loves fairies,\u201d he said of Spears. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018That\u2019s it, that\u2019s what we\u2019ve got to go on.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The musical is not about Spears, but sees Cinderella, Snow White, and other storybook heroines\u2019 narratives turned upside down when their book club gets a hold of The Feminine Mystique<\/em> thanks to a rogue fairy godmother, and they begin to question the meaning of \u201chappily ever after.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Briga Heelan stars as Cinderella, Justin Guarini as Prince Charming, Aisha Jackson as Snow White, Jennifer Simard as Stepmother, Adam Godley as The Narrator, Brooke Dillman as The O.F.G. (Original Fairy Godmother), Ryann Redmond as Stepsister Belinda and Tess Soltau as Stepsister Betany. <\/p>\n
