Dianne Feinstein suffered complications from shingles that included encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, and Ramsay Hunt syndrome, her office confirmed on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Feinstein, a Democrat, was diagnosed with shingles in February and was away from the Senate while recovering at home for some three months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">The New York Times <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/18\/us\/politics\/feinstein-illness-shingles-senate.html\">first reported<\/a> earlier Thursday that Feinstein suffered from encephalitis and Ramsay Hunt syndrome &#8212; which affects facial nerves and can cause facial paralysis &#8212; as a result of her shingles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">A spokesperson for Feinstein subsequently said in a statement that &#8220;the senator previously disclosed that she had several complications related to her shingles diagnosis. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/12\/politics\/khanna-feinstein-resign\/index.html\">said on CNN<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">&#8220;As someone from California, I felt an obligation to say what&#8217;s so many colleagues are saying in private,&#8221; he said then.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Many lawmakers publicly defended Feinstein, however, with Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow suggesting she was the target of sexist scrutiny compared with male senators &#8212; and that some of Feinstein&#8217;s critics may even be politically motivated in light of the race to succeed her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">&#8220;My antenna goes up when it <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears that a woman is being treated differently, when it&#8217;s unfair. I&#8217;m not saying that Sen. Feinstein doesn&#8217;t have health challenges, as do male colleagues,&#8221; Stabenow <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/q-and-a\/is-it-sexist-to-want-dianne-feinstein-to-retire\">told The New Yorker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">&#8220;Rather than people disrespecting her right now, I would prefer that they were wishing her well,&#8221; she said of Feinstein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">When Feinstein returned to Capitol Hill in May, she was warmly welcomed by colleagues and said in a statement that &#8220;even though I&#8217;ve made significant progress and was able to return to Washington, I&#8217;m still experiencing some side effects from the shingles virus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">&#8220;My doctors have advised me to work a lighter schedule as I return to the Senate. It&#8217;s more common in people with shingles who have compromised immune systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Other viral infections, like herpes simplex virus and some respiratory viruses, can also cause encephalitis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Symptoms of encephalitis include headache, vomiting, behavioral changes and a high fever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te, aggressive medical treatment is required for people who are suspected to have encephalitis as the disease can quickly progress, causing severe, irreversible neurological damage, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/health-information\/disorders\/encephalitis\">according to the National Institutes of Health<\/a>. Recovery can slow, and serious cases often require intensive rehab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Ekqk yuUa lqtk TjIX aGjv\">Ramsay Hunt syndrome is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"zZyg UbGl iFzk qdXb WCDh DbOX tqUt \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK557409\/\">another condition<\/a> caused by the varicella zoster virus.
