\n The cash-strapp<\/a>ed MTA is willing to open its books to the federal government if it gets $12 billion in requested aid, the agency\u2019s chairman said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not looking for, nor do we expect the blank check,\u201d Chairman Pat Foye told John Catsimatidis during an interview that aired Sunday on WABC radio\u2019s \u201cCats Roundtable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe realize we\u2019re going to have to show that we have these increased costs and that revenues have been reduced significantly as a result of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transit officials have said they need $12 billion to get through the end of 2021, as massive drops in ridership and tax revenues amid the coronavirus pandemic have left them contemplating dramatic service cuts.<\/p>\n

Foye was responding to claims by Catsimatidis \u2014 a supermarket mogul and onetime Republican mayoral candidate \u2014 that \u201csome of the people\u201d at \u201cthe highest levels\u201d in Washington want to \u201cput in a federal monitor\u201d over the MTA as a condition for giving it money.<\/p>\n

The MTA chairman did not agree to that specific suggestion, a spokesperson later said.<\/p>\n

But he cited the process by which the MTA received a previous allocation of $3.9 billion in pandemic relief, which ran out in July.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery dollar that we got, we had to report to U.S. DOT that we expected X dollars of revenue in April and X dollars of revenue in May, that we had additional expenses for instance, for disinfecting subway stations and subway cars,\u201d Foye said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to report that to the Federal Transit Administration which is part of U.S. DOT in Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foye has enlisted support from Catsimatidis and other New York Republicans in his effort to get the attention of their allies Washington, but the effort has yet to secure the MTA more money.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
