Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said on Sunday that President Biden\u2019s position on using the 14th Amendment to unilaterally address the debt ceiling, which the president outlined earlier in the day, is \u201clegally frivolous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Biden\u2019s position on the 14th Amendment is legally frivolous,\u201d Cruz said on \u201cFox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> Sunday.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a provision that was put in place to say that we\u2019re going to pay our Civil War debts,\u201d he added. \u201cIt refers to the Civil War that we had just fought and paying those war debts off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we have the authority\u201d to use the 14th Amendment, Biden told reporters at a press conference earlier Sunday in Hiroshima, Japan. \u201cThe question is, could it be done and invoked in time that it would not be <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ealed, and as a consequence past the date in question and still default on the debt. That is a question that I think is unresolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The argument for such a unilateral move is based on a phrase in the amendment to the U.S. Constitution that the public debt \u201cshall not be questioned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has previously warned that invoking the 14th Amendment would cause a \u201cconstitutional crisis.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cruz noted on Sunday that former President Obama also rejected the use of the 14th Amendment when he encountered similar roadblocks to raising the debt ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the way, someone else who agreed with that was Barack Obama,\u201d he said. \u201cThe left tried to convince Obama to do this, and Obama said, \u2018No, you can\u2019t do this under the Constitution, under the terms of the Constitution.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Texas senator suggested that Biden should instead vow to pay the interest on U.S. debt as a means of preventing default.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I said, Joe Biden can ensure that we don\u2019t default on the debt.
