TV anime<\/a> \u3010<\/em>OSHI NO KO<\/em>\u3011<\/em> is at a turning point with Aqua finding a potential lead. In our continued weekly behind-the-scenes interview, this week will feature our second voice cast member. Takeo Otsuka, the voice of Aqua, talked with Anime Trending about his role and insights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Were you familiar with <\/strong>\u3010<\/em><\/strong>OSHI NO KO<\/em><\/strong>\u3011<\/em><\/strong> before you were asked to perform as Aqua?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Takeo Otsuka:<\/strong> Yes. I think it was soon after the manga series<\/a> started. I came across one of those \u201cread chapter 1 for free\u201d manga booklets. One of those booklets happ<\/a>ened to be chapter 1 for \u3010<\/em>OSHI NO KO<\/em>\u3011<\/em>. That was my first contact with the series. That aroused my interest even before the auditions and anime adaptation announcement. I had been reading the manga volumes.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was your first impression when you saw the script for the anime series?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was already a surprise that the first episode is 90 minutes long, as that\u2019s about the length of a typical anime movie. But that conveyed just how much the staff was serious about this series.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I read the script, it was just like the original manga. But they added stage production that would further draw out the charm of the manga. So, I really felt from reading the script that this really will be a great series.<\/span><\/p>\n

For <\/strong>\u3010<\/em><\/strong>OSHI NO KO<\/em><\/strong>\u3011<\/em><\/strong>, there was an audition to decide which voice actor would get the role. How did you prepare for the audition? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I braced myself a bit because this was an audition for the anime. After all, I knew about the series beforehand, so I thought, \u201cOh, it\u2019s finally going to become an anime.\u201d As someone who does acting that has an audition process, it\u2019s really depressing when you\u2019re not chosen for a series you really like.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I really felt like \u201cOh, that time has come.\u201d (laughs) A part of me really felt like that. But in the end, I had been reading the \u3010<\/em>OSHI NO KO<\/em>\u3011<\/em> manga, so I went from there with my own version of Aqua.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, there was Gorou before the reincarnation and then Aqua\u2019s childhood years. The 90 minutes of the first anime episode is the foundation that leads to the Aqua that I play. I felt that I had to really pick up on all of that even from the audition phase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
