{"id":575866,"date":"2023-05-24T16:24:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-24T13:24:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/scientists-develop-artificial-leaf-that-could-power-the-cars-of-the-future\/"},"modified":"2023-05-24T16:24:28","modified_gmt":"2023-05-24T13:24:28","slug":"scientists-develop-artificial-leaf-that-could-power-the-cars-of-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/scientists-develop-artificial-leaf-that-could-power-the-cars-of-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"#Scientists develop \u2018artificial leaf\u2019 that could power the cars of the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-main-content\">\n                            <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from the University of Cambridge have developed an \u2018artificial leaf\u2019 that uses sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into ethanol and propanol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These so-called \u2018drop-in\u2019 fuels can directly power an internal combustion engine without any modifications, potentially offering a low-emissions alternative to gasoline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike fossil fuels, these solar fuels produce net-zero carbon emissions, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41560-023-01262-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the researchers, and are entirely renewable. What\u2019s more, unlike most bioethanol, they do not divert any agricultural land away from food production.\u00a0 <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers made the artificial leaf from multiple layers including copper, glass, silver, and graphite. The leaf contains light absorbers \u2013 similar to the molecules in plants that harvest sunlight \u2013 which are combined with a catalyst.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This catalyst, which is similar to chlorophyll, the catalyst for photosynthesis in a real leaf, is made from two elements \u2014 copper and palladium. Eliminating this step makes the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> \u201cmore practical and scalable,\u201d said the researchers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While other scientists have been able to produce similar chemicals using electrical power, this is slated to be the first time that such complex chemicals have been produced with an artificial leaf using only sunlight.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the technology is still at laboratory scale, the researchers say their artificial leaves are an important step in the transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEven though there\u2019s still work to be done, we\u2019ve shown what these artificial leaves are capable of doing,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Erwin Reisner, who led the research.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIt\u2019s important to show that we can go beyond the simplest molecules and make things that are directly useful as we transition away from fossil fuels.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team is now working to optimise the light absorbers so that the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y can better absorb sunlight. They are also working on optimising the catalyst so it can convert more sunlight into fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further work will also be required to make the device scalable so that it can produce large volumes of fuel.
