But he now faces what may be the biggest threat of his career from the GOP-controlled state House.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The very public knife fight has seen dueling allegations of public drunkenness, corruption and infidelity.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, four former state prosecutors commissioned by the state House publicly unveiled the results of their sweeping investigation into years of alleged misconduct by Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>Headlining those allegations: charges that the attorney general took bribes from an Austin real estate developer, then fired four deputies for reporting it to law enforcement \u2014 and then leaving taxpayers on the hook for a $3.3 million settlement with the whistleblowers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paxton is also accused of seeking a sweetheart job for a woman he was having an affair with and who had worked in his wife\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is alarming and very serious that we are having this discussion into why millions of taxpayer dollars have been asked to remedy\u201d Paxton\u2019s alleged misconduct, committee chair Rep. Andrew Murr (R-Junction) told the committee.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations \u201ccurl my mustache,\u201d added Murr, who sports an elaborate wax-tipped handlebar.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In addition to perpetrating crimes himself, Paxton has been \u201cacting with other individuals in a conspiracy to commit crimes that violate both the state of Texas\u2019s laws and federal laws,\u201d one member of the House investigative team told the oversight committee.<\/p>\n<p>The explosive charges came <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/05\/23\/dade-phelan-ken-paxton-resign-intoxication\/\">amid a broader fight<\/a> between the embattled attorney general and Republican House leadership, as The Texas Tribune reported.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Paxton accused House Speaker Dade Phelan (R) of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenPaxtonTX\/status\/1661097919443881987\">presiding over Tuesday\u2019s session<\/a> \u201cin a state of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent debilitating intoxication\u201d after a video emerged of the GOP leader <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>ping over his words from the dais.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>In that statement, Paxton blamed Phelan for the House\u2019s failure to \u201cpass critical conservative priorities including protecting the integrity of our elections and preventing Chinese spies from controlling Texas land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cI hope Speaker Phelan gets the help he needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But on Wednesday morning, Phelan revealed that the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RRRjHwIAKqQ\">House general investigating committee<\/a> \u2014 which Paxton had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenPaxtonTX\/status\/1661103327180890113?s=20\">called on to investigate<\/a> Phelan \u2014 was already investigating Paxton\u2019s \u201calleged illegal conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Paxton\u2019s statement \u201camounts to little more than a last-ditch effort to save face,\u201d Phelan said.<\/p>\n<p>In the whistleblower settlement agreement announced earlier this year, Paxton and the plaintiffs had agreed that the state legislature would pay out the money \u2014 pending House and Senate approval.<\/p>\n<p>But in March, the Texas legislature <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/texas\/2023-03-13\/legislature-has-little-appetite-to-fund-ken-paxtons-settlement-with-whistleblowers\">decisively rejected that idea<\/a> \u2014 and the state House began preparing the investigation of Paxton.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The investigation results were publicly aired Wednesday, as four Texas career prosecutors outlined in grueling detail favors Paxton had done for realtor Nate Paul \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/05\/24\/ken-paxton-abuse-power-house-investigation-texas\/\">and what Paul did for him in exchange<\/a>, as The Texas Tribune reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask that you look at the pattern and the deviations from the norm, questions not just of criminal activity but of ethical impropriety and for lacking in transparency,\u201d Erin Epley, lead counsel for the investigating committee, told lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ask you to consider the benefits [for Paxton].\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The whistleblowers\u2019 allegations centered on the claims that Paxton had used the state attorney general\u2019s office to investigate Paul\u2019s enemies and intervened on his behalf when a charity sued him.<\/p>\n<p>In return, Paxton received a \u201cfloor to ceiling renovation\u201d of his home in Austin \u2014 and a job as a construction manager for his alleged mistress, Epley told lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>The woman \u2014 who had no construction experience \u2014 was a former staffer in the office of Paxton\u2019s wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton (R).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Paul was sentenced to jail in March <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2023\/03\/04\/nate-paul-contempt-of-court-paxton\/\">for lying to a Texas court<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paxton is also in trouble <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2016\/07\/26\/paxton-probe-company-he-took-gifts\/\">for a $100,000 undisclosed gift<\/a> he received from a North Texas medical entrepreneur \u2014 who was himself subsequently ordered to pay $3.5 million to settle allegations that it had defrauded Medicare and Medicaid.<\/p>\n<p>That $100,000 was supposed to be disclosed to the Texas ethics commission \u2014 but \u201cnot until it was caught was the question asked,\u201d Employ said.<\/p>\n<p>The size of the gift aroused surprise from the legislators.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot many people walk up to me and give me $100,000. In fact, it\u2019s never happened,\u201d state Rep Charlie Geren (R) said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The four aides \u2014 all of whom were conservative Republicans \u2014 had complained about this conduct to state and federal law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>In a lawsuit charging wrongful termination, which eventually led to the $3.3 million settlement, the fired lawyers accused Paxton of a \u201cbizarre, obsessive use of power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It said some of Paxton\u2019s actions \u201cwere so egregious and so contrary to appropriate use of his office, that they could only have been prompted by illicit motives such as a desire to repay debts, pay hush money, or reciprocate favors extended by Paul,\u201d the Austin realtor said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Hill has reached out to Paxton\u2019s office for comment. During Wednesday\u2019s hearing, Paxton called into a Dallas radio show to complain about the proceedings, the Tribune noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is a level that is shocking to me, especially from a Republican House,\u201d Paxton told the radio host.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is what they have time to do as opposed to some of the important things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The attorney general now faces the prospect of impeachment by the House and a trial in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>His securities fraud investigation \u2014 now run from the Department of Justice central offices in Washington, D.C. \u2014 also remains ongoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Paxton <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/05\/25\/texas-bar-ken-paxton-2020-election\/\">faces a professional misconduct investigation<\/a> stemming from complaints by the Texas State Bar Association over his role in challenging the legitimacy of President Joe Biden\u2019s 2022 election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas Bar: I\u2019ll see you and the leftists that control you in court,\u201d Paxton said when the complaint was filed last year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite his legal troubles, Paxton cruised to his third term last year.
