For Meta, however, it marks another miserable anniversary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to research by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.privacyaffairs.com\/\">Privacy Matters<\/a>, Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s demonic brainchild has accrued <em>over half<\/em> of the \u20ac4bn in total GDPR fines.<\/p>\n<p>After amassing a staggering \u20ac2.5bn across seven separate penalties, it\u2019s safe to say that Meta won\u2019t be attending the birthday party. But it wasn\u2019t likely to have got an invite anyway.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/3yishpx6ry?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> behemoth has been feuding with EU lawmakers <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2019\/01\/29\/facebook-reluctant-regulation-1130090\">for years<\/a>. On <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/02\/07\/meta-threatens-to-shut-down-facebook-and-instagram-in-europe.html\">multiple<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/sep\/22\/facebook-says-it-may-quit-europe-over-ban-on-sharing-data-with-us\">occasions<\/a>, the company has gone as far as threatening to<span>\u00a0<\/span>shut down<span> services in Europe over data rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EU, meanwhile, have been merrily doling out fines for Meta\u2019s data protection breaches. The majority have<span>\u00a0been delivered by the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"il\">Data<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"il\">Protection<\/span><span> Authority of Ireland, where Meta has its European headquarters. The regulator dished out four fines in 2022 alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook owner is not alone in entering GDPR\u2019s crosshairs \u2014 but it\u2019s been by far the most consistent target.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon and Google <span>have<\/span> combined total fines of around \u20ac800 million \u2014 a figure dwarfed by Meta\u2019s most recent fine alone. Meanwhile, Microsoft, Apple, Pinterest, and LinkedIn have never been charged.<\/p>\n<p>The penalties have solidified the EU\u2019s reputation as the West\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/25\/big-tech-how-europe-became-the-worlds-top-regulator.html\">top tech regulator<\/a>. For GDPR, that\u2019s another cause for celebration.
