{"id":576293,"date":"2023-05-27T18:09:02","date_gmt":"2023-05-27T15:09:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mccarthy-says-congress-will-meet-june-5-debt-ceiling-deadline\/"},"modified":"2023-05-27T18:09:02","modified_gmt":"2023-05-27T15:09:02","slug":"mccarthy-says-congress-will-meet-june-5-debt-ceiling-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mccarthy-says-congress-will-meet-june-5-debt-ceiling-deadline\/","title":{"rendered":"#McCarthy says Congress will meet June 5 debt ceiling deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/mccarthykevin_052423tc04_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Saturday that Congress will meet the deadline to raise the debt ceiling, acknowledging that no deal has been made but vowing an agreement will be reached in time to prevent a government default.<\/p>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen raised the stakes in the marathon negotiations on Friday, when she provided the first hard deadline for when the government will be unable to pay down all of its obligations: June 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Asked if Congress can meet that deadline, McCarthy didn\u2019t hesitate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he said shortly after arriving at the Capitol Saturday morning for another round of talks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy vowed that he\u2019ll stick with the 72-hour rule \u2014 providing lawmakers a full three days to read the text of the legislation before they\u2019re asked to vote on it \u2014\u00a0and said he\u2019s been in talks with Senate leaders about how much time they\u2019ll need to ensure the June 5 deadline is met.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody won\u2019t like what is the end of the agreement \u2026 on both sides,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cBut \u2026 at the end of the day I think people should see what that product is before people vote on it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If a deal is reached Saturday, that would set the stage for a House vote on Tuesday, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy declined to name the barriers that remain as he and his deputies haggle with White House negotiators over the last outstanding disagreements. But he said Republicans have not dropped their demand for permitting reform, designed to eliminate regulatory hurdles to energy infrastructure projects, which Democrats have opposed for fear that it would degrade the environment at the expense of poor communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe did make progress, we worked well into early this morning. Some things we just have to finish out,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy also confirmed that Republicans have been in discussions with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) and moderate Democrats on particular issues \u2014 a dynamic that is sure to infuriate liberals, some of whom will be needed to get any deal through the House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know we talk to the White House often, but there are Democrats, from Joe Manchin, from Sinema, from Josh Gottheimer, and others. We gather ideas from them, too, when we\u2019re trying to solve the problem,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cThere are Democrats that are policy experts in certain areas that we\u2019re dealing with, we want to get their [perspective], too.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The Speaker outlined the rollout of any deal, saying he would make a vague announcement but withhold the details of any agreement to allow lawmakers to read the legislation before the press and the public do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s disrespectful that they learn about it someplace else,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy said the package won\u2019t be a thousand-page colossus, predicting it would weigh in at \u201c150 pages or less.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt will not be a long bill,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Whatever deal emerges is sure to be opposed by large members of both parties: conservatives who think it doesn\u2019t cut deeply enough and liberals who think it cuts too much.
