Ron DeSantis\u2019s faulty 2024 launch has raised the question of whether he\u2019s really the Republican best equipped to take on former President Trump in the primary.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis announced his presidential campaign on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> Spaces on Wednesday alongside Elon Musk, but the event was disrupted by technical glitches and largely mocked by critics afterward.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Republicans who would like to see someone other than Trump win the party\u2019s nomination largely believe DeSantis has what it takes to win; DeSantis\u2019s campaign said he raised $1 million within an hour of launching. Then, Thursday, the campaign revealed it raised a whopping $8.2 million within 24 hours of launching.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an enormous haul for the first 24 hours and shows that there are thousands of donors big and small behind the governor,\u201d said Dan Eberhart, a DeSantis donor who said he was in the room for the raise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        The Hill Elections 2024 coverage<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the rocky rollout of his campaign on Twitter, as well as his dwindling poll numbers over the last several months, have dented his reputation and handed some of his rivals an easy opening to attack him.<\/p>\n<p>Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R), who is trailing much of the primary field in the polls, tweeted a fundraising link Wednesday, writing \u201cJust like my policies, this link works.\u201d Meanwhile, former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley\u2019s campaign press secretary tweeted a video during DeSantis\u2019s launch harkening back to \u201cour incredible campaign launch.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the attacks on DeSantis from some of the other candidates in the field have been coming since before he launched his campaign. On Tuesday, Haley\u2019s campaign released a memo labeling DeSantis as Trump \u201cwithout the charm\u201d and accusing him of having an \u201cinability to interact directly with voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tone of Haley\u2019s team\u2019s emails to the press has also become noticeably snarkier toward DeSantis. On Wednesday, Haley\u2019s team highlighted her next campaign stops in New Hampshire with the subject line \u201cThere\u2019s Twitter\u2026And There\u2019s New Hampshire.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy jabbed at DeSantis in a tweet ahead of the announcement for having DeSantis donor David Sacks moderate his conversation with Musk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterested to know whether [Ron DeSantis] would\u2019ve supported the bailout of Silicon Valley Bank depositors,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VivekGRamaswamy\/status\/1661386510065606657?s=20\">Ramaswamy tweeted<\/a>. \u201cSince his megadonor [David Sacks] was the most vocal supporter of that bailout &amp; he\u2019s moderating the Twitter Spaces with Ron tonight, he should ask. A legitimate policy question for a Presidential candidate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, DeSantis and his allies are brushing off the criticism for the event. When asked about the Twitter launch in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>max on Thursday, DeSantis said, \u201cI\u2019m actually not a big social media guy.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI would rather watch you than be on some <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>, but it is important for a lot of people,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The governor also noted that \u201cthere were more people that tried to sign up than even what Twitter had anticipated,\u201d which his campaign has touted. On Thursday, the campaign tweeted a link to merchandise, writing \u201cBreaking Twitter was just the warmup\u2026Help us break Washington next.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Twitter announcement had roughly 300,000 concurrent listeners and 3.4 million total listeners as of Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>DeSantis allies have also pointed to his interview on Fox News, which averaged 2 million viewers, following his Twitter Spaces conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought the governor did a tremendous job of outlining not only who he is but also his vision for the country,\u201d said Republican pollster Robert Blizzard, who is doing work with the DeSantis campaign. \u201cWhen you think about who\u2019s the audience here, it\u2019s Iowa and New Hampshire Republican primary voters.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And many supporters and critics of DeSantis have been quick to point out that his conversation with Musk on Twitter likely will not resonate with voters in the early contest states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe handwringing and bed-wetting from a few folks out there is not rational,\u201d said Jason Cabel Roe, a Republican strategist. \u201cI don\u2019t think that there is anyone in the professional political class that doesn\u2019t understand that a new platform within the Twitter platform having a technical difficulty is not, per se, Ron DeSantis or his campaign\u2019s fault. It\u2019s Twitter\u2019s fault.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t stopped the former president from badgering DeSantis over the event. Trump called DeSantis\u2019s launch a \u201cdisaster\u201d in a post on his social media platform Truth Social and posted a doctored video on Instagram of a rocket launching and quickly exploding with \u201cRon! 2024\u201d on it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis responded to Trump\u2019s criticism, telling \u201cThe Pulse of New Hampshire\u201d on Thursday that Trump \u201cunderstands that I\u2019ve got a good chance to beat him, because he doesn\u2019t criticize anybody else now. It\u2019s only me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But others say Trump will likely continue to invoke the Twitter launch in an effort to mar the Florida governor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issue here is going to be the spin of the event,\u201d said Ford O\u2019Connell, a Florida-based Republican strategist. \u201cIf you are the Trump team, you\u2019re basically going to say, \u2018If he isn\u2019t ready to launch, then he isn\u2019t ready to run the country.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The latest onslaught of attacks from Trump and his team is part of an effort to define the governor for primary voters before DeSantis has a chance to fully reach the Republican primary electorate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt just wasn\u2019t the best opening for them. I think they\u2019re going to try to move forward,\u201d said one GOP strategist. \u201cI think the issue they\u2019re going to have is trying to turn the narrative around \u2014that\u2019s not going to happen unless they win Iowa.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/iowa-2024-biden-and-trump-start-with-significant-leads-in-party-caucuses\/\">Emerson College survey<\/a>\u00a0published Thursday showed Trump with a massive 42-point lead over DeSantis among Iowa Republican Caucus voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s allies have acknowledged the former president\u2019s lead but say that the race is much tighter than what Emerson College reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been other polls out there that have the race much tighter,\u201d Blizzard said. \u201cI don\u2019t buy for a minute that that\u2019s any semblance of reality in Iowa.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s been crystal clear for months that this is a two-man race,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis\u2019s effort to reach Republican primary voters in early states is just beginning. On Thursday, the campaign announced its first early-state blitz, dubbed \u201cOur Great American Comeback Tour.\u201d The tour will kick off in Iowa on Tuesday and include stops in New Hampshire and South Carolina.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody wants this election to be tomorrow, but it\u2019s not. It\u2019s a primary process,\u201d said Alex Stroman, a South Carolina Republican strategist. \u201cI don\u2019t think that any of the candidates\u2019 announcements have shown anything except that the race is wide open and won\u2019t be decided on cable TV and within the echo chamber on Twitter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Blizzard echoed that point, saying the conversation taking place around the campaign will change by the Iowa Caucuses.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re what, five, six, seven months away from the Iowa Caucus?\u201d Blizzard said. \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody will be talking about this in a week or so.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
