Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said on Tuesday that passing a debt deal without a Republican majority in the House would trigger an \u201cim<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te\u201d motion to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a majority of Republicans are against a piece of legislation and you use Democrats to pass it, that would immediately be a black letter violation of the deal we had with McCarthy to allow his ascent to the Speakership, and it would likely trigger an immediate motion to vacate,\u201d Gaetz told <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>max.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think Speaker McCarthy knows that,\u201d he added. \u201cThat\u2019s why he\u2019s working hard to make sure that he gets, you know, 120, 150, 160 votes. And that\u2019s why those of us who are not supportive of the bill are trying to point out that many of the changes are cosmetic in nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz is one of at least 25 House Republicans \u2014 out of 222 members of the Republican conference \u2014 who have said they will\u00a0not vote\u00a0for the deal struck by McCarthy and President Biden to raise the debt ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Florida Republican said Friday, before an agreement had been reached, that he saw\u00a0\u201cno serious threat\u201d\u00a0to McCarthy\u2019s Speakership and predicted the deal would pass with \u201cabout 80-100 Democrat votes and between 140-160 Republican votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiterally nobody except the press is talking about removing McCarthy right now,\u201d Gaetz\u00a0said\u00a0on Twitter last week.<\/p>\n<p>Gaetz was among a group of 20 hard-line conservatives who held up McCarthy\u2019s Speakership election in January, ultimately securing an agreement to lower the threshold to force a vote on ousting the Speaker to just one member.<\/p>\n<p>However, even amid some conservative backlash to his deal with Biden, McCarthy said Sunday that he was\u00a0\u201cnot at all\u201d concerned\u00a0about losing his leadership position.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) became the first Republican to\u00a0publicly support\u00a0ousting the Speaker over the debt ceiling deal Tuesday, but he did not commit to filing a motion to vacate, saying he would \u201cdecide that in conjunction with others.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar Media Inc.
