{"id":576832,"date":"2023-05-31T23:09:44","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T20:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/mcconnell-senate-could-pass-debt-bill-as-soon-as-thursday\/"},"modified":"2023-05-31T23:09:44","modified_gmt":"2023-05-31T20:09:44","slug":"mcconnell-senate-could-pass-debt-bill-as-soon-as-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/mcconnell-senate-could-pass-debt-bill-as-soon-as-thursday\/","title":{"rendered":"#McConnell: Senate could pass debt bill as soon as Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/mcconnellmitch_053123gn01_w.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) says he hopes the Senate will pass legislation to raise the debt limit Thursday or Friday, as conservative Republican senators now say they won\u2019t hold the bill up as long as they get to vote on amendments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The strong support among House Republicans for the deal negotiated between President Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has influenced the political calculus in the Senate, and right now there\u2019s little <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>etite among GOP senators to drag out debate and votes through the weekend. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you what I hope happens is that those who have amendments, if given votes, will yield back time so that we can finish this Thursday or Friday and soothe the country and soothe the markets,\u201d McConnell told reporters Wednesday. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The prospective timeline for passing the debt limit bill sped up considerably Wednesday when Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R) told reporters that he would not hold up the legislation \u2014 as he had previously threatened to \u2014 as long as he gets votes on several of his proposals to amend the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have any desire to hold it up for the sake of holding it up,\u201d Lee told a reporter for NBC <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That was a more conciliatory tone than Lee struck last week, when he threatened to \u201cuse every procedural tool at my disposal to impede a debt ceiling deal that doesn\u2019t contain substantial spending and budgetary reforms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He warned a deal that would do little to cut the deficit would \u201cnot face smooth sailing in the Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), another conservative who opposes the debt limit bill, says he won\u2019t prolong the Senate debate as long as he gets a chance to amend the Biden-McCarthy deal to cut total federal spending by 5 percent in each of the next two years. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking to express my opinion and the opinion of many, many conservatives,\u201d Paul said of his desire to vote on his proposal, which he is calling a \u201cconservative alternative\u201d to the Biden-McCarthy deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paul says Senate leaders will probably give him a vote on his amendment to speed up consideration of the debt bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t do it out of generosity but they may do it out of wanting to leave town for a weekend,\u201d he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>But he warned that if Senate leaders refuse to allow his amendment to come up for a vote, he will raise procedural objections to the bill, which could delay final passage of the legislation past the June 5 default deadline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we get no amendments, we\u2019ll be here until next Tuesday,\u201d Paul said.<\/p>\n<p>Other prominent conservatives including Sens.
