These performances came at a time of transition for Coltrane, who\u2019d seen unprecedented popularity earlier that year with his now-ubiquitous rendition of <i>The Sound of Music<\/i>\u2019s \u201cMy Favorite Things\u201d but was subsequently panned for the extreme experimentation of his live sets, incomprehensible to most critics of the time. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The quintet is already immortalized on the beloved album <i>Coltrane \u201cLive\u201d at the Village Vanguard<\/i>, recorded several months later. But today (June 1), Impulse! Records have announced an album of newly unearthed recordings from the Village Gate sessions. <i>Evenings at the Village Gate<\/i>, due out July 14, compiles unauthorized recordings of the group taken by the venue\u2019s sound engineer, Richard Alderson, who ran a line from a single onstage mic to a reel-to-reel tape recorder to test the space\u2019s new, state-of-the-art system, NPR\u2019s Nate Chinen explains in an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/05\/31\/1179098682\/john-coltrane-eric-dolphy-village-gate-1961-lost-album\">exclusive early review of the record<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>            <i>Evenings<\/i> comprises five unreleased takes of Coltrane classics: \u201cMy Favorite Things,\u201d \u201cWhen Lights Are Low\u201d (an older jazz standard), \u201cGreensleeves\u201d (an <i>even older<\/i> English folk standard), and two Coltrane originals \u2014 \u201cAfrica\u201d and \u201cImpressions.\u201d The Village Gate version of the latter track is out today, alongside an immersive visualizer.
