Ron DeSantis (R) is seeking to peel away evangelical Christian support from former President Trump as the group is set to play a pivotal role in the 2024 Republican primary.<\/p>\n<p>The competition for the voting bloc was on full display this week in Iowa,\u00a0where DeSantis held his campaign launch at Eternity Church in Clive. The Florida governor\u2019s moves come as as some evangelicals have criticized Trump\u2019s stance on abortion.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed three Supreme Court\u00a0justices that led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but since that time, his stance on the sanctity of human life has been unclear. It\u2019s been very nuanced,\u201d Bob Vander Plaats, an Iowa evangelical political activist who endorsed Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in 2016, told The Hill on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>Nation earlier this week. \u201cI think what voters want to hear is clarity on that issue. Not nuance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And DeSantis\u2019 allies are taking note. On Thursday, the pro-DeSantis super PAC Never Back Down<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gaQ_Z443gBA&amp;t=17s\">\u00a0rolled out an ad in Iowa<\/a>\u00a0hitting Trump for saying last month that the six-month ban on most abortions that DeSantis signed into law in Florida was \u201ctoo harsh.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pro-life community expects better than that,\u201d Vander Plaats is heard saying in the spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But despite the criticism the former president has received from figures in the anti-abortion movement, he is still highly regarded by evangelical voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen over the last five to six years Trump has a very strong hold and a very strong footing with the evangelical base,\u201d said Melissa Deckman, CEO at the Public Religion Research Institute. \u201cWhite evangelical Protestants have stuck by Donald Trump through a myriad host of events including a pandemic, including Jan. 6, including trials we\u2019re hearing about.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trump_retains_evangelical_backing\"><\/span>Trump retains evangelical backing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monmouth.edu\/polling-institute\/reports\/monmouthpoll_us_053023\/\">Monmouth University poll\u00a0<\/a>released earlier this week showed Trump leading DeSantis by 28 points among self-described evangelical voters in a head-to-head matchup in May. The latest polling is a jump for Trump among the voting bloc. In a head-to-head matchup with DeSantis in March, Monmouth found Trump leading\u00a0by\u00a09\u00a0points among\u00a0evangelicals. In February, the same poll showed Trump trailing DeSantis with the voting bloc by\u00a07\u00a0points.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The voting bloc\u00a0boosted the former president in the 2016 and 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> elections. According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/opinion\/polling-matters\/324410\/religious-group-voting-2020-election.aspx\">exit polling conducted by Edison Research<\/a>, 80 percent of White evangelical Protestants voted for Trump\u00a0in 2016, while 76 percent backed the former president in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, there is one man responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade and it\u2019s Donald Trump,\u201d said Robert Jeffress, an influential evangelical pastor and senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Dallas. \u201cHad there been no Trump presidency, Roe v. In his mind \u2018Well, there\u2019s political realities out there and I get what I can get.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amann said that the group appreciates\u00a0what Trump has accomplished so far on abortion, but he added \u201cas evangelical pastors, we\u2019re just going to always press for a total ban.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Jeffress, who has also spoken with the former president, said he understands where Trump is coming from in terms of how far he goes politically on abortion restrictions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked with him about it,\u201d Jeffress said, \u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s soft on it at all, but I think he realizes that if you\u2019re going to have a national policy, there\u2019s going to have to be some compromise. Nobody likes to use the word compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"DeSantis_could_make_gains\"><\/span>DeSantis could make gains<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Republicans were hit hard on the issue in last year\u2019s midterm elections. Democrats used abortion to go on the offensive in states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona and Georgia,\u00a0and\u00a0they found\u00a0success.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Anti-abortion advocates, in turn, have pointed to victories seen by governors with anti-abortion stances like DeSantis. The Florida governor signed the state\u2019s six-week abortion ban after his reelection\u00a0in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe other thing [evangelicals] really put into play is,\u00a0\u2018Can you win?\u2019\u00a0And not just win the primary, but can win the general election,\u201d Vander Plaats, who has not endorsed a candidate, said in an interview with The Hill. \u201cI think that is Trump\u2019s highest hurdle and I think DeSantis is saying, \u2018Listen, I barely won Florida in\u00a0\u201918. I won it in a landslide in\u00a0\u201922. We made inroads into demographics that typically don\u2019t vote conservative.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And while Trump has strong support from evangelicals, polling shows that DeSantis is viewed favorably by the group, which could give him an opening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>A survey released by the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/spotlight\/prior-to-trumps-indictment-key-republican-constituencies-gave-him-favorable-ratings\/\">Public Religion Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0in March found that 36 percent of white evangelicals said they viewed DeSantis favorably, while 26 percent said the same about Trump. Deckman noted that in March more voters were unfamiliar with the Florida governor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think many of Ron Desantis\u2019 policies in Florida are targeted to win the support of base voters in the GOP, especially cultural conservatives and white evangelicals,\u201d Deckman said. \u201cI think the question will be is it enough to pull support away from Donald Trump.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And there are numerous other\u00a0Republican\u00a0candidates who are looking to peel away Trump\u2019s support among evangelical voters and the primary base as a whole, including South Carolina Sen.
