\n Never mind, World Health Organization officials said Tuesday \u2026 about what it said the day before.<\/p>\n

At a briefing Monday, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO\u2019s head of emerging diseases and zoonosis, said that people with the coronavirus but no symptoms aren\u2019t driving the spread. A day later, she clarified that the science<\/a> isn\u2019t clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the data we have,\u201d she explained the first day, \u201cit still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual. It\u2019s very rare,\u201d according to \u201ca number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing.\u201d<\/p>\n

After that got huge publicity as an app<\/a>arent game<\/a>-changer, she hedged the next day, \u201cI did not say that asymptomatic cases cannot transmit; they can,\u201d she said. \u201cThe question is, do they? And if they do, how often is that happening?\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a technical angle here, too: the difference between truly asymptomatic people (who never show symptoms) and pre-symptomatic ones (who will, in a few days).<\/p>\n

Bottom line: No top public-health experts should talk to the press unless they\u2019re ready to avoid misunderstandings the first time. This kind of flip-flop only breeds paranoia.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
