Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), vice chairman of the Democratic Caucus, said during a press briefing in the Capitol. \u201cWe do not interfere in ongoing law enforcement investigations.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The comments came in response to\u00a0a new effort\u00a0by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), a vocal Trump ally and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, to obtain more information about special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s investigations into the former president. <\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/republicans-judiciary.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/2023-06-06-jdj-to-garland-doj-re-jack-smith.pdf\">a letter sent Tuesday morning<\/a>\u00a0to Attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Merrick Garland, who <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed Smith to the post last November, Jordan is demanding that the DOJ release the initial memo outlining the scope of Smith\u2019s investigative duties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe previously requested information and documents related to the FBI\u2019s raid on President Trump\u2019s residence and its subsequent investigation,\u201d Jordan wrote. \u201cBecause you have not provided this information, and in light of your appointment of Jack Smith as special counsel, we write to request an unredacted copy of the memorandum outlining the scope of Mr. Smith\u2019s probes regarding President Trump and any supporting documentation related to his appointment as special counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jordan has requested that the documents be turned over by June 20 at the latest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lieu, a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, said the request constitutes a politically motivated encroachment into an independent, executive branch investigation. He warned Jordan not to hold his breath for the documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaw enforcement should be allowed to do its job. It is, frankly, outrageous that you have Chairman Jordan trying to interfere in an ongoing federal investigation,\u201d Lieu said. \u201cAnd by the way, the Department of Justice is just going to ignore it.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Appointed last November, Smith has been focused on several different episodes involving Trump since his defeat at the polls in 2020, including his effort to overturn the results of the election and the circumstances surrounding the subsequent discovery of classified documents at Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago residence in South Florida.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jordan and other Trump allies in Congress have accused the DOJ of conducting a \u201cwitch-hunt\u201d in order to damage Trump politically, heading into a 2024 election contest where he is far-and-away the leading contender for the GOP nomination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration has rejected those charges, and Democrats on Capitol Hill are backing those assertions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis is a House Republican conference that has talked routinely about defunding the FBI,\u201d Rep.
