\n Sports desk: Will Fans Watch Politicized Games?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWith their boycott of games\u201d to \u201cprotest the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis.,\u201d NBA and MLB athletes might have crossed a bridge too far, warns City Journal\u2019s Steven Malanga. \u201cFans who were already watching less sports may react negatively to being lectured by wealthy athletes who regularly walk off the job\u201d \u2014 especially given \u201cthe increasing habit of NBA players and coaches of criticizing the US and its citizens, even while many gave a pass to China \u2014 one of the league\u2019s biggest new markets \u2014 during its crackdown on Hong Kong dissidents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Riot beat: Killing Downtown Minneapolis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nearly six months of lockdown have \u201cleft fewer eyes on the street and growing worries about safety\u201d in downtown Minneapolis, Eric Roper and Maya Rao report for the Minneapolis Star Tribune \u2014 concerns that \u201cboiled over last week after rioters broke windows and looted businesses along Nicollet Mall, following false rumors police had killed a black man downtown.\u201d After months of seeing \u201cfewer cops, more harassing pedestrians and fights breaking out daily on Nicollet Mall,\u201d resident Vanessa Rybicka says, \u201cI\u2019m moving my business out to the suburbs.\u201d Condo listings are soaring and rents sagging. \u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking to hear the helicopters. It\u2019s heartbreaking to hear the sirens day in and day out,\u201d says black resident Suzanne Bengtson. The area\u2019s City Council member, Lisa Goodman, warns that looters \u201care ripping away at the whole fabric of the city by this lawless behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n

2020 journal: Why the RNC Was a Success<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Republican National Convention was a resounding success,\u201d app<\/a>lauds Marc Thiessen at The Washington Post, because it gave \u201cmillions of reluctant voters\u201d permission to vote for President Trump. Voters know it\u2019s \u201cin their economic self-interest\u201d to back him, but they\u2019ve been told repeatedly by Democrats he\u2019s a racist. So the RNC featured black speakers attesting to Trump\u2019s achievements for African Americans, a \u201cside\u201d of him most Americans never see. Republicans made a \u201csustained, four-day push for African-American votes\u201d and those of Americans who care about racial justice. \u201cI have done more in three years for the black community than Joe Biden has done in 47 years,\u201d declared Trump, and \u201cthe best is yet to come.\u201d That, cheers Thiessen, was \u201cexactly the message\u201d reluctant voters needed to hear.<\/p>\n

Conservative: A Window Onto Realignment<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf there were an epicenter of the shift in our political parties,\u201d Salena Zito writes in the Washington Examiner, \u201cMahoning County, Ohio, would be it.\u201d Once solid, blue-collar Democratic territory, Mahoning stunningly shifted close to the Republican column in 2016. Why? \u201cA combination of automation, technology<\/a> and bad trade deals .\u2009.\u2009. left a scarred landscape not just strip<\/a>ped of factories, but of homes, barbershops, churches \u2014 and hope.\u201d But whereas pro-business, libertarian-minded Mitt Romney got crushed by President Barack Obama there in 2012, President Trump made gains four years later (while still coming short of winning the county). In 2020, \u201cRepublicans plan on making the shift whole\u201d \u2014 and, in doing so, making permanent the realignment of the two parties, with Democrats now representing the \u00adupscale and the educated while the GOP emerges as the new home of the working class of all races.<\/p>\n

Culture critic: The Case for Looting?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Radical trans activist and author of \u201cIn Defense of Looting\u201d Vicky Osterweil \u201cmust have been overcome with joy when rioting and looting broke out in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death,\u201d snarks Ben Sixsmith at Spectator USA. Yet what she stands for is no joke: \u201cOsterweil is the classic sort of leftist who attempts to wrap enough pretty language around violence and destruction as to ennoble it.\u201d And Osterweil is misogynistic to boot, claiming in her book that \u201cas a mode of struggle, riots are marked by many characteristics traditionally defined as feminine: not driven by rational argumentation or \u2018proper\u2019 political dialogue.\u201d Her arguments in favor of looting are so lousy, Sixsmith admits, they make \u201cme think she might be an undercover conservative trying to make the left look bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
