Kyrsten Simena (I-Ariz.) and two Democrats, Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.), in the higher chamber.<\/p>\n<p>If Biden had not vetoed the measure, borrower advocates worried that 40 million student loan borrowers could have faced backpay for those paused payments and had new interest charges added to their debt. (Photo by Jemal Countess\/Getty Images for We, The 45 Million )<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_now\"><\/span><strong>What now?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The measure is likely dead now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt did not pass the House and Senate with enough votes to override a presidential veto, so borrowers do not need to worry about it,\u201d Mark Kantrowitz, author and student loans expert, told Yahoo Finance. \u201cThis was motivated by political posturing, as the people behind it knew that it would not survive a veto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, the Senate\u2019s passage shocked borrower advocates after the White House agreed to not extend forbearance and that paused student payments would restart in September in a debt ceiling deal with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).<\/p>\n<p>Borrower advocates hoped the ability to extend the forbearance pause was a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/student-loans-biden-has-no-plan-b-yet-if-supreme-court-strikes-down-loan-forgiveness-102232324.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:plan B;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\">plan B<\/a> if the Supreme Court rules against student loan cancellation.
