Thirty-five percent of the 65 million US Gen Xers have less than $10,000 saved, and 18% have no savings.<\/p>\n<p>The results, echoed in two other recent surveys, reflect the burdens this generation faces and are a big wake-up call \u2014 especially for the oldest members who are about a decade from retirement age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen X is staring at one of the most complex landscapes for retirement readiness in decades,\u201d Prudential Vice Chair Rob Falzon told Yahoo Finance. \u201cDue to the decline in defined benefit pension plans, which often supported previous generations\u2019 retirement, as well as uncertainty about the economy and long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Social<\/a> Security benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Gen_Xers_have_less_confidence_in_their_financial_future\"><\/span><strong>\u2018Gen Xers have less confidence in their financial future\u2019<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 469px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:38%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"(Credit: Prudential)\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/x7GYm4qcZtQ_puNv4q28Zg--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD00Njk-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/6ef8f528d9311b092845eb80785feeb3\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"(Credit: Prudential)\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/x7GYm4qcZtQ_puNv4q28Zg--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD00Njk-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/6ef8f528d9311b092845eb80785feeb3\" class=\"caas-img\"><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">(Credit: Prudential)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The Prudential research comes on the heels of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allianzlife.com\/about\/newsroom\/2023-press-releases\/americans-facing-a-new-retirement-reality\" data-ylk=\"slk:latest study;cpos:2;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">latest study<\/a> from Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America published last week and Northwestern Mutual&#8217;s 2023 Planning &amp; Progress <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/news.northwesternmutual.com\/2023-05-15-Two-Thirds-of-Americans-Expect-the-United-States-to-Enter-Recession-This-Year-Most-Are-Taking-Steps-to-Navigate-Economic-Uncertainty\" data-ylk=\"slk:Study;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Study <\/a>published in mid-May, both of which raised serious concerns about Gen X\u2019s future financial outlook.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a trifecta of gloomy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> for Gen Xers.<\/p>\n<p>In Allianz\u2019s report, 64% of Gen Xers worry they won\u2019t have enough saved for retirement, up from 55% in 2021. And 69% of them said they are confident in their ability to financially support all the things they want to do going forward, down from 73% last year and lower than the 76% for millennials and 86% for boomers.<\/p>\n<p>Allianz Life conducted the online survey of 1,000 adults who either had $150,000 or more in investable assets, or incomes of $50,000 a year if single and $75,000 a year if married in February and March of 2023.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_Gen_X_so_behind_on_retirement_saving\"><\/span><strong>Why is Gen X so behind on retirement saving?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 828px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:67%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"LAUREL, MD - MAR9: Shelly Pollard, left, helps her daughter Shelby Pollard study in their home in Laurel, Md., on March 9, 2020. (Photo by Cheryl Diaz Meyer for The Washington Post via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While it could be easy to blame apathy or disengagement \u2014 characteristics that Gen Xers have often been saddled with by onlookers \u2014 there are several underlying economic issues making it harder for this cohort to save.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal for retirement planning is to enjoy today without feeling like you\u2019re sacrificing tomorrow\u2019s dreams, but Gen X is clearly more anxious than other generations about what lies ahead,\u201d Christian Mitchell, chief customer officer at Northwestern Mutual, told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany in this generation are simultaneously taking care of kids and aging parents. When so many people count on you, it\u2019s easy to deprioritize yourself,\u201d he said. \u201cBut as their retirement age gets closer, pressure for Gen X builds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding to those responsibilities is higher consumer prices.<\/p>\n<p>More than two-thirds of working Gen Xers are concerned about reaching their savings goals due to inflation, and nearly three-quarters say the current economic environment makes it hard to plan beyond day to day, according to the Prudential research.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, 67% of those canvassed by Allianz say their income is not keeping up with the rising cost of living, up from 54% just last year.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_Gen_Xers_expect_in_retirement\"><\/span><strong>What do Gen Xers expect in retirement?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Their solution: Almost half (47%) of all working Gen Xers expect to retire later than anticipated to make up for that, and another 2 in 5 plan to work part time after retirement, Prudential reported.<\/p>\n<p>While the Prudential survey found that 58% expect to rely on Social Security as their primary source of retirement income, the Northwestern Mutual one found that just 45% were \u201cvery or somewhat confident\u201d that Social Security will be there to support them when they need it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div class=\"caas-figure-with-pb\" style=\"max-height: 466px\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader\" style=\"padding-bottom:38%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"(Credit: Prudential)\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/aen1qBbsV1q3wQCVCVTgzw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD00NjY-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/d16963d828ff841ac4b054cb6a837cce\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"(Credit: Prudential)\" src=\"https:\/\/s.yimg.com\/ny\/api\/res\/1.2\/aen1qBbsV1q3wQCVCVTgzw--\/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTEyNDI7aD00NjY-\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/aol_yahoo_finance_433\/d16963d828ff841ac4b054cb6a837cce\" class=\"caas-img\"><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">(Credit: Prudential)<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>That makes sense because the current <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/workers-are-feeling-grim-about-their-retirement-prospects-study-finds-133017644.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:projections;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\">projections<\/a> are that, if no policy action is taken, the Social Security trust fund reserves will be depleted by 2033 when the oldest Gen Xers hit full retirement age. At that point, Social Security will be able to pay out only 77% of benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Pensions are also a thing of the past. Only 20% of Gen Xers plan to use traditional pensions as a source of retirement income and a tiny 11% say they will mainly rely on a pension, Prudential reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a new era we are entering into, where folks are dependent on their defined contributions plans for retirement and very few lucky folks \u2014 excluding government employees \u2014 have defined benefit plans which they can use in retirement,\u201d Tricia Rosen, a certified financial planner with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessfinancialplanning.com\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Access Financial Planning;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Access Financial Planning <\/a>in Andover, Mass., told Yahoo Finance.<\/p>\n<p>And while in the past, home equity was often a kitty to fund retirement lifestyles, a slim 16% of Gen X plan to use their home value to support their retirement years.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_financial_plan_in_place\"><\/span><strong>No financial plan in place<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many Gen Xers also have their heads in the sand when it comes to even focusing on their future.<\/p>\n<p>Although they know they are admittedly not financially in good shape for retirement, nearly half spend no time a week thinking about retirement, according to Prudential\u2019s survey, while two-thirds have no retirement strategy, a real sticking point, according to many financial advisors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGen Xers have not taken the time to get a financial plan in place,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.prudential.com\/advisor\/barbara-pietrangelo__;!!Op6eflyXZCqGR5I!A8j96uSFdYYHf0Cay9V9u3rM6WbO2EiphYwDAM_-kvLvPnQGtG8K5qpLBAwA4YxT-FQGZs-NH22cVn9M5KK7WgzssAkqj_z0%24\" data-ylk=\"slk:Barbara Pietrangelo;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Barbara Pietrangelo<\/a>, a certified financial planner with Prudential in Ada, Michigan, told Yahoo Finance. \u201cThose that have a plan tend to feel in a much better place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But a quarter surveyed by Allianz say \u201cretirement is too far away for me to start worrying about it now,\u201d while nearly half say they can\u2019t even think about saving for retirement right now and are just trying to take care of day-to-day expenses.<\/p>\n<p>To be fair, it may not be that they are blithely tuning out. There are indications that Gen Xers are, in fact, concerned and they\u2019re increasingly cognizant that time is not on their side. Only a quarter of Gen Xers say they have plenty of time to save money for retirement later, down from 43% in 2021, the Allianz Life study found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re starting to reach that critical window in preparing for retirement, which is usually about 10 years before leaving the workforce,\u201d Allianz\u2019s LaVigne said. \u201cAt that point, many people are at a life stage to really focus on retirement \u2013their kids are grown, they are likely making more money, and have already made big purchases like a home. Maxing out retirement plan contributions \u2014 including catch-up ones when they hit 50 \u2014 is also imperative.<\/p>\n<p>The Prudential survey found that many Gen Xers are taking steps, with 56% saving 10% or more of their income, 40% upping retirement contributions, and 86% adjusting their lifestyle so they can save more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is this: While time to plan is running out, there is still time to act,\u201d Mitchell said. \u201cThe data represents an opportunity for Gen X to mobilize and get organized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Kerry Hannon is a Senior Reporter and Columnist at Yahoo Finance.
