{"id":578011,"date":"2023-06-09T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/republicans-buckle-down-for-what-could-be-marathon-blockade\/"},"modified":"2023-06-09T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-09T10:00:00","slug":"republicans-buckle-down-for-what-could-be-marathon-blockade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/republicans-buckle-down-for-what-could-be-marathon-blockade\/","title":{"rendered":"#Republicans buckle down for what could be marathon blockade"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is racing to break the lower chamber deadlock triggered this week by disgruntled conservatives, but rank-and-file members aren\u2019t holding their breath for a resolution.<\/p>\n<p>A number of House Republicans left Washington on Thursday warning the sides remain so far apart that it might require weeks \u2014 maybe longer \u2014\u00a0to get the House back to working order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The conservatives are furious with McCarthy\u2019s handling of last month\u2019s debt ceiling negotiations, which led to a deal with President Biden loathed by GOP hard-liners who think the Speaker caved too easily on the Republicans\u2019 deficit reduction demands.<\/p>\n<p>As payback, 11 conservative firebrands \u2014\u00a0most of them members of the far-right Freedom Caucus \u2014\u00a0bucked tradition and opposed a procedural motion on Tuesday, blocking four Republican messaging bills from reaching the floor this week. Given the Republicans\u2019 razor-thin House majority, that number was more than enough to sink the rule, bring McCarthy\u2019s legislative agenda to a screeching halt and force GOP leaders to cancel three days of scheduled votes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The House is slated to vote again Monday. But as the chamber recessed on Thursday, some of the detractors were signaling the blockade will continue until McCarthy can satisfy their ill-defined demands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"nlp-ignore-block article-content rich-text\">\n<aside class=\"promo-link\">\n        House floor paralyzed by conservative revolt<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in no hurry,\u201d Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) said.<\/p>\n<p>House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry (R-Pa.), who voted in favor of the rule Tuesday but has joined opponents in meetings with GOP leaders, expressed the same sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s face it, when we pass things around here that are messaging bills that don\u2019t do anything, is it really a loss that we\u2019re not passing anything?\u201d Perry said. \u201cAnd when we do pass things around here that actually hurt the American people, is it a loss that we\u2019re not doing any of that?\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Rep. I mean, we\u2019re not gonna shut the House down for two years, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d Fitzpatrick said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Fitzpatrick also suggested the stalemate might extend well into the month, saying lawmakers should \u201cgive \u2018em a few weeks to work it out\u201d before raising alarms.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>As the standoff entered its third day on Thursday, the tensions were simmering over within the GOP conference, where a number of moderate members were lashing out at the conservatives for stalling the party\u2019s agenda.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t even know what the logjam\u2019s about,\u201d Rep. (AP Photo\/Andrew Harnik, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Complicating McCarthy\u2019s dilemma, the conservatives are airing their grievances without naming specific demands that might end the standoff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cMy idea is that he broke it, he\u2019s gotta fix it, and that it\u2019s not up to me to come up with a solution,\u201d said Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), former head of the Freedom Caucus. \u201cIt\u2019s up to him. So I\u2019m waiting to see what he proposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The practical effects of the impasse are negligible. GOP leaders were forced to cancel votes on four proposals scheduled over three days this week, but they were all messaging bills with no chance of being considered in the Democrat-led Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Politically, however, losing control of the House floor is a disaster for the chamber\u2019s GOP leaders. And it\u2019s raised new questions about McCarthy\u2019s ability to unite his restive conference and lead the party heading into high-stakes battles with Biden later in the year, particularly on funding the government to prevent a shutdown.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>McCarthy has insisted the impasse will only make the House GOP stronger \u2014 as he\u2019d argued throughout his 15-ballot Speaker election in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know this job is not an easy job, I don\u2019t seek it because it\u2019s easy. I like the challenge and you know what, I\u2019ve got a challenge,\u201d he said Wednesday. \u201cI will listen to them, I will respect them all, but at the end of the day, we\u2019ve got to come together as one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perry would not explicitly reveal whether the hard-liners plan to continue blocking rules until McCarthy meets their demands, but he also sent a veiled warning: \u201cI don\u2019t know that many rules will come up until it\u2019s resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>One bill that\u2019s set to come up next week is at the center of the firestorm that helped ignite the rebellion: A measure sponsored by Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) to block the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from banning pistol brace attachments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clyde alleged that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) last week threatened to deny a vote on the gun proposal if Clyde did not support the rule on the debt bill \u2014 an allegation that in part led to Tuesday\u2019s revolt on the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>Scalise, though, said earlier that day he had talked to Clyde about the measure lacking the GOP support to pass. Later in the day, Clyde emerged from a meeting with Scalise and said the bill would get a vote Tuesday. The two released statements Thursday endorsing the legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether the gun vote will break the impasse, particularly since conservatives have been mum on their specific demands. McCarthy has said their ambiguity is \u201cthe difficulty\u201d preventing a resolution.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, conservatives\u2019 qualms with McCarthy are being heard loud and clear.<\/p>\n<p>Boebert on Thursday said agreements reached during the January Speaker\u2019s race had been breached, the \u201cmain thing\u201d being a stipulation that Republicans would demand a cut in 2024 spending to 2022 levels in any debt ceiling legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not what we received,\u201d Boebert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw that agreements were breached from the Speaker\u2019s race that we had in January, and I can give you 4 trillion reasons why we are not releasing control of the House floor at this time,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1400\" height=\"787\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/boebertlauren_053023tc01_w.jpg?w=900\" alt=\"Rep. While conservatives at the time called for a budget resolution within that framework, McCarthy has rejected the idea that he broke any of the agreements he struck with the hardliners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to get back to 2022 levels. We also know that we got to pass a bill,\u201d McCarthy told reporters Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty with parsing out the details from January is that many of the agreements were not written down or made public. Republicans explicitly called for McCarthy to ensure any bill passed got support from a majority of Republicans \u2014 a bar he easily met \u2014 but they lashed out when the bill got support from more Democrats than Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know the ins and outs or the details of what deals Freedom Caucus made [with] the Speaker\u2019s race \u2026 which is why, like with the debt ceiling, everything we agreed to should be in writing so we can hold our leaders accountable,\u201d Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Perry disagreed, saying he does not regret the absence of written evidence documenting McCarthy\u2019s January concessions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know what we know,\u201d Perry said. \u201cI just read a document in the SCIF. It doesn\u2019t mean that I need a copy of it to know what was in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the talks continue and the legislative session drags on, some lawmakers are wondering how long the stalemate could stretch on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know how long it\u2019s gonna last, to be honest with you,\u201d Rep.
