Lauper\u2019s older sister Ellen describes her as such toward the end of the doc, quaintly encapsulating the film\u2019s thesis. You may think of Lauper as one or all of the above identities, but recognizing her precision as a producer seems to be the only true way to understand her artistry. And like any pop diva, her public image is just as engineered as her albums.<\/p>\n<div class=\"review-summary-card\">\n<div class=\" lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column@mobile-max lrv-u-padding-a-125 u-background-color-honey-light \">\n<div class=\"lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column u-width-275@tablet u-border-b-1@mobile-max u-border-r-1@tablet u-border-dotted lrv-u-margin-r-150 lrv-u-padding-r-150 lrv-u-margin-r-00@mobile-max lrv-u-padding-r-00@mobile-max lrv-u-padding-b-125@mobile-max lrv-u-margin-b-075@mobile-max\">\n<h3 id=\"title-of-a-story\" class=\"c-title  lrv-u-font-family-primary u-font-size-34 u-font-size-38@desktop-xl lrv-u-line-height-small lrv-u-margin-b-125 \"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Let_the_Canary_Sing\"><\/span>\n<p>                    Let the Canary Sing     <\/p>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>                    <span class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-u-font-family-accent lrv-u-font-weight-bold lrv-u-color-brand-primary lrv-u-font-size-16 lrv-u-display-block\">The Bottom Line<\/span><br \/>\n                    <span class=\"c-span  u-font-size-22@tablet u-font-style-italic lrv-u-font-family-secondary\"><\/p>\n<p>    The archival footage is worth the sleepy storytelling.<br \/>\n    <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Let the Canary Sing <\/em>is slight but competent, a \u201cCyndi by Cyndi\u201d opportunity for the singer and a choice group of her family, friends and collaborators to nostalgically recount her biography. The film is as conventional as Lauper herself was avant garde. Despite its hagiographical tendencies, however, it does manage to teach the audience a thing or two about the songstress\u2019 early survival skills and the intense production work behind some of her blockbuster singles, including \u201cGirls Just Wanna Have Fun\u201d and \u201cTime After Time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Like some of her most joyous tracks, the doc goes down easy. It also barely challenges our preconceived perceptions of Lauper\u2019s talent, kindness and sense of humor. In fact, Ellwood posits that Lauper\u2019s biggest flaw may be her stubborn loyalty to other people. How sweet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Utilizing a mixture of contemporary interviews, archival footage and animated sequences, Ellwood\u2019s form is as straightforward as it comes, which infuses a sleepy quality to the storytelling. I felt myself rev up, though, whenever young Lauper showed up on screen. Whether delivering seamless one-liners in her deliciously nasal Noo Yawk lilt or bopping around on stage with candy-colored hair and decoupage-like layers of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arel, Lauper at her professional height appears positively aerated. (It\u2019s a wonder that Lauper is still known for her asymmetrical post-punk hairdos and funky DIY ensembles considering she came up at the same time scrappy-era Madonna was beginning to suck up all the air in the room.) Lauper radiates irresistible warmth and vibrance in old interviews and performances, her body-thrashing on-stage showmanship as vital as her impressive vocal range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Let the Canary Sing<\/em> \u2014 named after a proclamation from the judge who ruled in Lauper\u2019s favor during a record label lawsuit \u2014 struggles with pacing, spending a surprising portion of time on Lauper\u2019s painful outer-boroughs childhood with a professionally unfulfilled mother and a perniciously abusive stepfather. Due to both the emotional rejection and lack of physical safety in her house, Lauper left home as a teenager and found refuge with her queer older sister and a chosen family of gay men who thereafter inspired her ally activism. (Decades before Lady Gaga\u2019s \u201cBorn This Way,\u201d Lauper was singing \u201cTrue Colors\u201d to the people in her life she lost from AIDS.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    She spent her 20s fronting a blues rock band called Blue Angel, sometimes imitating Janis Joplin, but Lauper\u2019s career didn\u2019t catapult until she stopped mimicking others and fully embraced her own sui generis sensibilities. When she finally went solo, record execs wanted to use her powerful voice to morph her into the next Barbra Streisand. \u201cI felt like I was always penalized because I had a bigger voice. Remember those days?\u201d modern-day Lauper says to a musical partner. \u201c\u2018People with big voices sing and people who don\u2019t have big voices write.\u2019\u201d\u00a0She wanted to be her own one-stop shop. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    If you watch this film at all, watch it for the behind-the-scenes alchemy of how Lauper and her teams brewed her biggest hits. I never understood how musically complex \u201cGirls Just Wanna Have Fun\u201d is until I listened to Lauper describe the fascinatingly deliberate choices of her arrangement in detail, from the production sounds meant to summon amusement-park-ride memories to the \u201960s girl group-like composition to the thrilled vocal \u201chiccups\u201d she weaves throughout the song. These evocative and meticulous decisions, all aimed at creating an emotional context for the listener even if they can\u2019t pinpoint the origins of the aural references, showcase the true engine behind Lauper\u2019s triumphs that has nothing to do with her octave range. In other words, Lauper\u2019s internal creativity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    The most successful music documentaries showcase a multifaceted cultural context that helps explain the lightning-in-a-bottle phenomenon of an artist\u2019s fame and glory. <em>Let the Canary Sing<\/em> doesn\u2019t do this. It\u2019s so laser-focused on Lauper herself, especially on how her trauma drove her ambition, that we don\u2019t get a sense of why audiences were ready for her or her message in the early 1980s. She\u2019s all colors and s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>es and patterns and textures, but we don\u2019t get a sense of how \u201cdrab\u201d the pop music scene might have been when she arrived. This isn\u2019t an outcome movie but a process movie.
