{"id":578998,"date":"2023-06-17T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-17T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/gop-fires-warning-shots-at-biden-over-iran-deal-making\/"},"modified":"2023-06-17T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2023-06-17T10:00:00","slug":"gop-fires-warning-shots-at-biden-over-iran-deal-making","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/gop-fires-warning-shots-at-biden-over-iran-deal-making\/","title":{"rendered":"#GOP fires warning shots at Biden over Iran deal-making"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/Iran-Russia-11092022.jpg?w=900\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Republicans are warning the Biden administration against pursuing any agreement with Iran that would provide sanctions relief without <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval from Congress, amid signs of progress in negotiations to contain Iran\u2019s nuclear weapons program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While President Biden\u2019s top aides are keeping quiet on any progress with Tehran, reports that U.S. and Iranian officials are looking to carry out deescalating actions as part of an informal agreement are infuriating GOP members.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI urge the Administration to remember that U.S. law requires that any agreement, arrangement, or understanding with Iran needs to be submitted to Congress,\u201d Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, wrote in a letter to Biden on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>American diplomacy with Iran is a partisan flash point that touches some of the most serious U.S. foreign policy issues, including support for Israel, pushing back on Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine and confronting China\u2019s ambitions for global influence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s a battle that Republicans are happy to stoke ahead of the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans who celebrated former President Trump\u2019s withdrawal in 2018 from the nuclear deal with Iran have long-argued that Biden\u2019s pursuit of diplomacy with Tehran are limited under the terms of the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (INARA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cINARA was enacted with strong bipartisan support to ensure Congressional oversight of U.S. policy regarding Iran\u2019s nuclear program,\u201d McCaul wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis definition makes clear that any arrangement or understanding with Iran, even informal, requires submission to Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Biden\u2019s allies cast doubt on the INARA argument, but Republican and conservative hardliners are staking out their positions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran is an adversary and a state sponsor of terrorism. Any back-door agreement here is an attempt to skirt congressional oversight,\u201d Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, tweeted on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden Admin is long-overdue to address reports of these misguided \u2018proximity talks\u2019 with Iran,\u201d Senate Foreign Relations ranking member Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) tweeted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cSanctions relief will only free up cash for the regime\u2019s support for Russia, terror proxies, and state-sponsored murder of its own citizens. Shameful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Chang, a senior fellow with the conservative foreign policy think tank Gatestone Institute, and who is reportedly advising Florida Gov. Ron Desantis\u2019s (R) presidential campaign, slammed Biden\u2019s outreach to Iran as emboldening China.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden Administration, by inking a new deal, is about to shovel billions of dollars to Iran. Yet that regime, with China\u2019s help, is destabilizing the Persian Gulf and North Africa, and both Tehran and Beijing say we\u2019re an enemy. So why is Biden so intent on helping them?\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GordonGChang\/status\/1669753796505874448?s=20\">he tweeted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The GOP alarm comes amid reports that the Biden administration is on the brink of an informal agreement with Tehran aimed at reining in some of Iran\u2019s most dangerous behavior.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This includes Iran agreeing to limit its enrichment of nuclear-weapon fuel to 60 percent, below the 90 percent purity needed for a bomb. Iran would also halt lethal attacks on U.S. contractors in Syria and Iraq by its proxy forces, expand cooperation with international nuclear inspectors and hold back from selling ballistic missiles to Russia, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/14\/us\/politics\/biden-iran-nuclear-program.html\">New York Times reported<\/a>, citing Iranian officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, the U.S. and partners could hold back strict enforcement of existing sanctions, allowing Iran some economic relief.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Such actions appear to be underway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, while rejecting reports that the U.S. has reached an agreement with Iran over its nuclear program, confirmed that the U.S. had allowed Iraq to transfer to Iran $2.76 billion in backlogged gas and electricity payments, issuing a waiver for sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe approved a transaction, consistent with previous transactions that have been approved, to allow Iran to access funds held in accounts in Iraq for humanitarian and other non-sanctionable transactions,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/briefings\/department-press-briefing-june-13-2023\/\">Miller said Tuesday<\/a>, adding such waivers pertain to \u201chumanitarian and other non-sanctionable transactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Other benefits for Iran reportedly include the U.S. and partners holding back from seizing Iranian-oil tankers, and not pursuing punitive measures through international organizations like the United Nations or International Atomic Energy Agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another key priority for the U.S. is securing the release of Americans jailed in Iran.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani confirmed Monday that the U.S. and Iran had carried out indirect talks over exchanging prisoners.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIf the other party shows the same seriousness and goodwill, this can happen in the near future,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/iran-says-prisoner-exchange-with-us-could-happen-soon-2023-06-12\/\">Kanaani reportedly said<\/a> in a televised briefing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.il\/en\/departments\/news\/event-discussion130623\">remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> earlier this week proclaiming Israel\u2019s right to counter Iranian threats regardless of \u201csmaller agreements\u201d is another signal that Washington and Tehran are reaching some sort of consensus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Non-proliferation advocates argue that Republican and Democratic fighting over the strategy to address Iran\u2019s malign behavior \u2013 its pursuit of nuclear weapons, support for terrorism and supply of weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine \u2013 undermines efforts to reduce nuclear weapons risk, in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, and casts doubt on America as a reliable broker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResponsible members of Congress, Republicans or Democrats, should understand that it is in the U.S. and international security interests to communicate clearly and strongly to Iran that there are certain lines that must not and shall not be crossed regarding their advancing nuclear program,\u201d said Daryl Kimball, Executive Director of the Arms Control Association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Democrats, Republicans and independents should be united too, in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2023 Nexstar <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media<\/a> Inc.
