\n Tom Hanks was leading the romantic comedy genre in the 90s with Meg Ryan, but his wife, Rita Wilson, revealed that he actually turned down starring in another classic.<\/p>\n

\n During a recent episode of the Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi<\/em> podcast<\/a>,\u00a0the actress-producer said Hanks was asked to star in 1989\u2019s When Harry Met Sally\u2026<\/em>, but declined the role.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cPeople probably don\u2019t know this, but Tom was offered\u00a0When\u00a0Harry Met Sally\u2026<\/em>,\u00a0and he turned it down because he was going through a divorce and he was very happ<\/a>y to be not married,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cAnd so he could not understand that a person going through a divorce would have anything other than just like, \u2018I\u2019m so happy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The Forrest Gump<\/em> actor later went on to star opposite Ryan in 1993\u2019s\u00a0Sleepless in Seattle<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and 1998\u2019s\u00a0You\u2019ve Got Mail.<\/em> And Billy Crystal ended up landing the role of Harry Burns in the film directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron.<\/p>\n

\n Before When Harry Met Sally\u2026<\/em> was released, Hanks and Samantha Lewes had gotten a divorce in 1987. The actor then tied the knot with Wilson in 1988.<\/p>\n

\n During her podcast appearance, Wilson also opened up about how she got the role of Suzy in Ephron\u2019s Sleepless in Seattle<\/em>. After Hanks accepted the part, the actress said she \u201cloved that script so much\u201d when reading it.<\/p>\n

\n Wilson also noted that she loved the way Ephron wrote for Carrie Fisher in When Harry Met Sally\u2026<\/em> and This Is My Life<\/em>. Then, when she ended up running into Ephron at a party, she asked the filmmaker if she could audition for the role of the best friend (Becky) if she wasn\u2019t going to cast Fisher. <\/p>\n

\n The actress said she went in for an audition, but \u201cdidn\u2019t get the part. They gave it to Rosie [O\u2019Donnell]. But Nora offered me the role of Suzy, this other character. And I was like, \u2018Oh yeah, that was a really good part of the script. I really like that character. There was a big monologue in there.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Wilson added that the role ended up being \u201cone of the most fun, most wonderful acting experiences I\u2019ve ever had.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
