In the face of an ongoing skills gap, it\u2019s having to move with the times. That\u2019s why Germany recently decided to make it easier for people from outside the EU to move there for work, with new legislation on the way to help attract fresh foreign talent.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reform_on_the_way\"><\/span>Reform on the way<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The move to reform the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.make-it-in-germany.com\/en\/visa-residence\/skilled-immigration-act\">Skilled Immigration Act<\/a> (which was cleared by the Cabinet in March) has been spurred on by the fact that the country is suffering from a major skills gap. Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Hubertus Heil, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/e859c90c-1ac4-4bf4-9660-b3a0882c2305\">told the Financial Times<\/a> that if it doesn\u2019t take action, Germany will be short a whopping 7 million workers by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the skills the country\u2019s missing are in the IT sector, which is interesting\u00a0 given that tech companies love Germany. Major industry leaders like <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le, Amazon, and Airbnb have already been tempted to set up offices there. Meanwhile the country is an incubator for a range of startups alongside homegrown tech behemoths such as SAP and Zalando.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/3yishpx6ry?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But traditionally, it hasn\u2019t been easy for workers from outside of Europe to move to Germany. Heil is determined to change this. He fears the skills shortage will put a \u201cbrake\u201d on Germany\u2019s economic growth, particularly as experienced baby boomers retire in the coming years and their roles go up for grabs.<\/p>\n<p>To help attract more workers from abroad who can bring much needed skills, he\u2019s in the process of reforming legislation. This will make it easier for foreign workers to look for a job in Germany, without the need for a German professional qualification.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Take_a_%E2%80%9Cchancenkarte%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>Take a \u201cchancenkarte\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Part of this new system will involve what\u2019s called a \u201cchancenkarte\u201d or \u201copportunity card.\u201d It sets out the criteria for entry involving a points system based on factors like vocational training or a degree, experience, and age.<\/p>\n<p>If applicants have enough points, they\u2019ll be allowed to look for a job in Germany. The government will issue a certain number of these cards every year.<\/p>\n<p>Moving to a new country can bring some challenges, but it\u2019s also an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture. In the past, Germany tended to treat people moving from outside the EU for work as \u201cGastarbeiter\u201d or \u201cguest workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Heil says he wants the focus to be on making people feel welcome and integrated in society, not treated as temporary members of the community.<\/p>\n<p>The government launched a portal\u2014<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.make-it-in-germany.com\/en\/\">Make it in Germany<\/a>\u2014several years ago, aimed at workers from abroad. Last year, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs made a direct appeal in a new YouTube video for the portal, telling skilled workers: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E3SY8BkRZug\">\u201cWe need you.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_tech_hubs\"><\/span>Key tech hubs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With a population of 83 million, Germany is a huge country with a number of fast-growing tech hubs. But where should you base yourself if you move there for a job in tech?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/de\/Documents\/Innovation\/Digital-Hubs-Germany-Ranking-Deloitte-2018.pdf\">A Deloitte study<\/a> found that Munich is the key hub in the country, where you can find the highest number of STEM jobs and the highest level of specialisation in the ICT sector.<\/p>\n<p>Berlin came second, while Hamburg was also a highlight. But it\u2019s not just the well-known German cities that are good options for tech workers\u2014the same research found that Darmstadt, a city near Frankfurt with the moniker of \u201ccity of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>\u201d was also a top location for tech roles.<\/p>\n<p>Major tech players have been flocking to Germany to set up bases there. Along with a wealth of startups, in Berlin you\u2019ll find Zalando, Google, and Facebook; Munich is where Apple set up its European Silicon Design Center and where Amazon Web Services has offices, while Hamburg is home to Dropbox, Microsoft, and Airbnb.<\/p>\n<p>You can see why they\u2019re attracted to the country\u2014it has a strong welfare system, a low crime rate, good wages, excellent childcare, and a great healthcare service. Its proximity to other European countries means <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> across the EU is easy.<\/p>\n<p>Interested?
