The Intelligence Committee hearing will take place behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr1_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The report, which was the culmination of a roughly four-year investigation, found that authorities did not have sufficient evidence to open the case.<\/p>\n<p>Also this week, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is eyeing another vote on her resolution to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) after Democrats and 20 Republicans successfully blocked the measure last week. The congresswoman, however, made changes to the resolution to alleviate concerns among her GOP colleagues that have already flipped some \u201cno\u201d votes.<\/p>\n<p>And in the House, lawmakers will vote on a resolution condemning the housing of migrants in schools, and could make an attempt to override President Biden\u2019s veto of a resolution to overturn his student loan relief plan. On the Senate side, the chamber could vote on the Chile Tax Treaty.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"John_Durham_to_testify_on_Capitol_Hill\"><\/span>John Durham to testify on Capitol Hill<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>John Durham is scheduled to be on Capitol Hill this week to testify before two House panels after he released his highly anticipated report into the \u201cCrossfire Hurricane\u201d probe, which looked into potential contacts between Trump\u2019s 2016 campaign and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>He is set to testify behind closed doors before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, then again in a public hearing with the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday at 9 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Durham\u2019s report \u2014 the product of a roughly four-year investigation \u2014\u00a0issued a scathing assessment\u00a0of the FBI\u2019s process and how it started, then proceeded with, the investigation.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr2_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Republicans were quick to\u00a0point to the report as evidence\u00a0that federal intelligence and law enforcement agencies are weaponized against political enemies, especially Trump. The alleged weaponization of law enforcement has been a common theme throughout the House GOP majority, especially after Trump was indicted both on the state and federal levels.<\/p>\n<p>House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) on Sunday said lawmakers are going to ask Durham for recommendations on changes the panel can pursue.<\/p>\n<p>Turner noted that even though the Durham report did not recommend any \u201cwholesale changes in the guidelines and policies that the Department and the FBI now have in place to ensure proper conduct and accountability in how counterintelligence activities are carried out,\u201d the former special counsel has agreed to provide his thoughts on adjustments that he thinks should be made.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr3_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHe did, however \u2014 and I have spoken to him directly \u2014 agree that he would give us his insight as to what changes he thinks need to be made, and that\u2019s the work that our \u2026 committee is doing,\u201d Turner said during an interview on CNN\u2019s \u201cState of the Union.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re pulling him into our committee to say, OK, now that we have seen that there were abuses, that this was wrong, and that there are problems with [the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] itself, what are the recommendations that you think we should pursue? Here are some of the things we\u2019re looking at. What do you think of these?\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Florida_Republican_eyes_Schiff_censure_resolution_round_two\"><\/span>Florida Republican eyes Schiff censure resolution round two<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is eyeing another vote this week on her resolution to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) after making revisions to the measure that allayed concerns of some Republicans who joined Democrats in\u00a0blocking the resolution\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr4_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The resolution calls for censuring and condemning Schiff \u201cfor conduct that misleads the American people in a way that is not befitting an elected Member of the House of Representatives.\u201d Luna introduced the measure in May but brought it to the floor as a privileged resolution last week, forcing the House to take action on it.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty Republicans, however, joined Democrats in voting for a motion to table the measure, which was enough for the motion to pass and for the censure resolution to be blocked.<\/p>\n<p>Luna, however, is aiming for the House to vote on the resolution again this week after making changes to the resolution that fueled some GOP opposition.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr5_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>Ahead of last week\u2019s vote, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) \u2014 one of the GOP \u201cno\u201d votes \u2014 voiced concerns with a nonbinding \u201cwhereas\u201d clause in the bill that said if the Ethics Committee finds that Schiff \u201clied, made misrepresentations, and abused sensitive information,\u201d then he should be fined $16 million. He argued that it violated the 8th and 27th amendments.<\/p>\n<p>Luna\u2019s spokesperson, however, told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2023\/06\/16\/trump-adam-schiff-censure-house-vote\">Axios that her office<\/a> has \u201cremoved the fine to address the concerns of those that voted no,\u201d adding that they have \u201cgotten excellent feedback so far and look forward to next week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The change appears to have relieved some GOP concerns.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr6_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThank you for fixing your bill for next week,\u201d Massie wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> early Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI respect the Constitution and the oath we take to it. These revisions address my concerns and I will vote to hold Rep. Schiff accountable,\u201d Rep. Marc Molinaro (R-N.Y.), another earlier \u201cno\u201d vote, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marcmolinaro\/status\/1669487568415596544?s=20\">said in a tweet<\/a>\u00a0Thursday night.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"House_votes_Resolution_condemning_housing_migrants_in_schools_potential_vote_on_student_loans_veto_override\"><\/span>House votes: Resolution condemning housing migrants in schools, potential vote on student loans veto override<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The House this week is set to vote on a resolution \u201ccondemning the use of elementary and secondary school facilities\u201d to provide shelter to migrants.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ad-unit ad-unit--mr7_ab\"><\/aside>\n<p>The measure points to a situation in New York City last month when the city\u00a0started converting some public school gyms into facilities that could house migrants, which sparked backlash from parents. Soon after, migrants were moved out of a number of gyms, particularly ones in Brooklyn. The city, however, has said that the gyms could be used again as housing facilities if needed for temporary overflow, according to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/18\/nyregion\/migrant-housing-shelters-nyc.html\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The move from the city came after the expiration of Title 42, a Trump-era border policy that allowed border officials to turn away asylum seekers because of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution set for consideration in the House this week argues that using schools as housing centers for migrants \u201ccompromises schools\u2019 duty to educate enrolled children and keep them safe\u201d and \u201cposes a significant safety risk to school children and compromises schools\u2019 ability to secure their own campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, in a nonbinding \u201cwhereas\u201d clause, the resolution says schools that are used to house migrants \u201cshould be ineligible to receive Federal financial assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The House this week may also vote to override President Biden\u2019s veto of a resolution that seeks to overturn his student debt relief plan to give up to $20,000 in loan forgiveness to borrowers.<\/p>\n<p>The House approved the resolution\u00a0in May,\u00a0followed by the Senate\u00a0in June, but Biden\u00a0issued a veto\u00a0shortly after. At least two-thirds of the House would have to support the veto override for it to pass, which is unlikely to occur \u2014 only 218 lawmakers supported the resolution last month, with 203 in opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Just two House Democrats \u2014\u00a0Reps. Jared Golden (Maine) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (Wash.) \u2014\u00a0joined Republicans in voting to overturn Biden\u2019s student debt forgiveness plan.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Senate_could_vote_on_Chile_Tax_Treaty\"><\/span>Senate could vote on Chile Tax Treaty<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) filed cloture on a tax treaty between the U.S. and Chile last week, teeing up a vote on the treaty this week.<\/p>\n<p>The treaty, referred to as the Chile Tax Treaty, would reduce double taxation and withholding rates, according to Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate panel approved the treaty in a 20-1 vote earlier this month and will need at least two-thirds support from the chamber when it comes to the floor for a vote; The Senate does not ratify treaties, but instead gives its\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/general\/Features\/Treaties_display.htm#:~:text=Treaties,negotiated%20by%20the%20executive%20branch.\">advice and consent<\/a>\u00a0through resolutions of ratification. Ratification is ultimately up to the president.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/b6991e94-e96f-aa13-f0c8-166233cdfc0b\/Treaty%20Doc.%20112-8_Resolution_of_Advice_and_Consent_to_Ratification2.pdf\">advice and consent resolution<\/a>\u00a0under consideration in the Senate is supportive of the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe this treaty is vital to strengthening U.S. competitiveness and growing U.S. foreign direct investment in Chile, a strong democratic partner,\u201d Menendez said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/press\/dem\/release\/sfrc-chairman-menendez-celebrates-historic-approval-of-the-chile-tax-treaty-to-protect-and-promote-us-foreign-direct-investment-in-chile\">in a statement<\/a>\u00a0after the Foreign Relations Committee approved the treaty.<\/p>\n<p>It is unlikely that the Senate will vote on Julie Su\u2019s nomination to be Labor secretary this week, as Democratic leadership and the White House work to shore up support for her confirmation. They have been unable to win over the support from moderate Sens.
